Creating a global evidence map for animal management in zoos | About Conservation Evidence Andrew Bowkett introduces a new evidence map for zoo animal management interventions

Nice summary of our massive evidence map of interventions in zoos on the Conservation Evidence blog page, written up by Andy Bowkett: about.conservationevidence.com/2025/08/11/c...

Husbandry and management interventions for the conservation and welfare of captive animals – a systematic evidence map | Journal of Zoo and Aquarium Research

Great to see our evidence map of husbandry and management actions in zoos and aquaria (identifying 1071 studies that quantitatively evaluate such actions) out in JZAR! This was a big piece of work with a lot of investment from lots of people, so fantastic to see it out! www.jzar.org/jzar/article...

Nice piece in the Conversation giving an overview of our recent Biological Conservation paper, which highlights the threat tropical cyclones pose to species in Biodiversity Hotspots.

Great to see the huge new (open access) BioTIME 2 paper out; very happy to have contributed to this with lots of excellent collaborators! Should be a super-useful resource going forwards: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10....

Very pleased to help out with this great new open-access paper led by @thereremouse.bsky.social which provides a much-needed update to the terrestrial mammal inventory of Krka National Park, Croatia. Should be a very useful resource for park managers!

Great to see our paper on the threat of tropical storms to global island biodiversity out. Key highlights are the Caribbean being especially vulnerable to storm-driven extinctions, and the identification of 60 'high risk' species representing key conservation priorities shorturl.at/EAqOS

Leopard - no conclusive North African records for many years
Lion - Extinct in North Africa since the 1960s
Tiger - Extinct in Turkey since the 1970s
Scimitar-horned Oryx - extinct in the wild late 1980s (locally reintroduced)
Hartebeest - North African ssp. extinct 1920s

Roman Mosaic in the Bardo museum in Tunisia which showcases shifting extinction baselines. Orpheus plays his lyre to a bunch of animals that all occurred in the Roman empire (and all except the tiger in Tunisia) when it was made, yet are now all extinct (or only recently reintroduced):

Great to see this book chapter preprint out on @authorea.com; a massive piece of work providing an extremely thorough overview of the knowledge gaps that impede research into poorly-studied taxa. Congratulations to @jonathancazabonne.bsky.social and @dhaelewa.bsky.social for pushing this through!

Ormia sp. are very special Tachinidae as they have β€˜ears’ on their prothorax that they use to listen for the hosts (Orthoptera) for their offspring to live in and consume πŸ˜ŽπŸ€“

will write a fuller summary when the final article is published, but results essentially show Covid-19 was probably beneficial for hunted species in CNP, given the nature of hunting here is largely recreational rather than subsistence (and bad economy = less recreational hunting).

Great to see this @plosone.org article out, excellently headed up by @dhaelewa.bsky.social and @thereremouse.bsky.social. This cross-site study demonstrates that standardized bat survey techniques dont work equally well in all ecosystems, and assuming that they do can severely impact results!
