But also I think 3D always faces an uphill battle due to the difficulty of navigation on a 2D screen, particularly on a phone. Few get this right

Three fiber isn't bad! IME agents are still unusably terrible at trying to do nontrivial 3D things though. You can't really blame them, they're still basically blind

I suspect that increasing the dimensionality of the visualization just to 3D would vastly improve the topology, but the web isn't very friendly to 3D, (or really software in general is unfriendly to it) so nobody does it

Projection to 2D destroys almost all of the proximity information. If we could see the full high dimensional space, those errors would almost surely be gone

I think it's actually quite far away in high dimensional space, but where to arrange it exactly relative to the other clusters in 2D is a free parameter, and it just happened to land there

you can see there's actually a moat of void around it. I bet that represents a large high-dimensional distance
