Macbeth nació en Halliwell , un suburbio de Bolton , y estudió en la Escuela de Arte de Glasgow . Provenía de una formación artística: entre sus tíos se encontraban los artistas Robert Walker Macbeth y Henry Macbeth-Raeburn , y su abuelo paterno fue el retratista Norman Macbeth .

En 1902, participó en la «Sección Escocesa» de la Primera Exposición Internacional de Arte Decorativo Moderno de Turín donde ganó una medalla de plata por el diseño del Escudo de Armas de Glasgow.

En 1901, Macbeth se convirtió en asistente de Jessie Newbery y su impactante trabajo de bordado recibió cobertura regular en The Studio . En 1906, comenzó a impartir clases de metalistería en la Escuela de Arte de Glasgow. Allí también impartió clases de encuadernación de 1907 a 1911 y de decoración cerámica a partir de 1912.

Junto con la psicóloga educativa Margaret Swanson, Macbeth publicó el libro de texto "Educational Needlecraft" en 1911. Este libro obtuvo reconocimiento internacional e influyó ampliamente en la enseñanza de la costura. Difundió el enfoque radical del diseño del Movimiento de Glasgow y puso en práctica las ideas del movimiento Arts and Crafts.
Falleció 23 de marzo de 1948 a los 72 años.
