Sorta like you said gray zone. Because there are people who don't interact verbally but they'll post fanfic, fanart, or even interact by reposting/reblogging/liking stuff from the fandom without a word or not joining groups. To me that's still being a part of it. 🤔 That's how I see it

It just sucks over the year fandom is now a toxic thing. Because now people assume youre a dick and weird just because other fans like to gate keep and be fucking weird about things and shame people for not liking what they like. Not sure why they do that. But EVERY fandom has those fans

I'm opinion/belief is if you're into any tv show, book, movie cartoon ect. And you draw fanart/talk/ write about it. You are in a fandom even if you don't interact with people from that fandom youre still apart of it. And there nothing wrong with being apart of one.
