Studies show that self diagnosis is often accurate, while it is also common for doctors to misdiagnose due to bias or misinformation.
Our current setup is extremely flawed, and we deserve better. Also there needs to be more accurate representation in media.
It's mostly that there are lots of potential negative consequences to diagnosis for autism specifically, but there aren't any assistance programs or anything to incentivise formal diagnosis. Add in public access to the dsm-5, raads-r, and spectrum tests, and it's just easier to self diagnose
