So many of the leading men of the 1930s and 1940s aged at an alarming rate, probably because of a combination of chain-smoking, heavy drinking, lack of sleep, too much sun, poor skin care and a lack of stress management. A lot of them looked like they were 10-15 years older than they actually were.

He was so understated at first it took me a while to figure out that’s what he was doing. When he mentioned “petrol” and his wife said “nappies,” that gave it away. Yes, Australian is very tough to do for Americans — very easy to slip into bad Cockney, if you’re not careful.

It is incredible on the big screen, if you ever get a chance to see it that way. Those crazy colors!

My guess would be that the digital file was faulty. In cases like that, you’re stuck. I have seen all sorts of digital projection problems over the years and, generally, the only way to fix them is to download a new file, which takes a lot of time because you are dealing with enormous files.

I remember seeing a trade screening of LAMBS in September 1990. I asked the rep from Orion when the studio was planning to release it. He said Valentines Day. I laughed. He said, “Really — I am not kidding.” He wasn’t! Brilliant move. Brilliant movie!
