The government must respect Indigenous rights and
consult, because democratic and constitutional obligations aren’t optional in this country. Fast-tracking legislation without proper engagement is not leadership, it’s negligence.
That is why National Indigenous organizations like the ITK, AFN, and NAN have warned that C-5 is not only unconstitutional, but it’s a direct path to legal challenges and delays. True progress means honouring Indigenous rights, not bulldozing past them in the name of political convenience.
The Liberals and Conservatives teamed up to vote down 39 of the amendments. The Government's failure to uphold Indigenous rights doesn’t just betray its legal and moral obligations, it threatens to derail the very nation-building
projects it claims to champion.
C-5 must be done right. The NDP fought to amend this legislation and submitted 40 amendments to uphold the democratic process, Indigenous rights, environmental protections and workers’ health and safety.
And in a world full of noise — where American-owned media giants and online misinformation dominate our screens — we need to protect something that’s ours - before it's gone for good.
