I hope this is one of the most consequential pieces I will have ever written.

lidar point cloud of a treed area showing several fallen dead trees

Random lidar question - does anyone know of tools for identifying/quantifying fallen dead trees using point cloud data?

Seems apparent, visually and could probably code something up but curious if there are off-the-shelf tools folks know of (preferably in QGIS)

A band, George Thorogood and the Destroyers, onstage. There are red and blue lights and the band members are playing guitars and a saxophone.

We said back the we would see them someday and it only took 40 years!

And they were great- they really know how to put on a show!

a man in a plaid shirt and tie says " uncool uncool uncool " ALT: a man in a plaid shirt and tie says " uncool uncool uncool "

When friends asked who the bad was we even shamed them a little for not knowing.

From then on, we were in. We even got a picture out of a teen magazine of George Thorogood and the destroyers, and we put it in our locker that we shared.

Because back then there were lockers at school. (This was obviously during the Stone Age.)

Our young teenage brains just thought this was the funniest thing we’ve ever heard, and we could not believe we were witnessing it.
But also, the music kind of kicked ass.

If you aren’t familiar, the lyrics say “ I drink alone yeah with nobody else, you know when I drink alone, I prefer to be by myself.”

When Kerry and I heard this, we dissolved into a fit of giggles because of course, if you are alone, you’ll be drinking by yourself if you are drinking. Duh 🤣🤣🤣

So one night, either in 8th grade or 9th grade or the summer between, at a sleepover at Kerry’s we were watching VH1, or maybe night tracks, when George Thorogood came on.
The song was I drink alone.

A selfie of me and my friend Kerry smiling with our heads leaned in toward each other as we wait for the concert to start.

Tonight I went to see George Thorogood and the Destroyers with my friend Kerry. She and I have been fans since we were 14. Thanks @phaneritic.bsky.social for a great Christmas gift!

I wrote about this issue last year. In short, vaccines have been so effective that people have almost entirely forgotten what it is like to live with these really nasty diseases

A color outdoor portrait of American bacterial geneticist Evelyn Witkin in her later years, standing in a sun-dappled garden or courtyard setting with green foliage and a brick building in the soft-focus background. She is an elderly woman with fair skin, short wavy white hair, gentle smile lines, and warm, thoughtful eyes gazing directly at the camera with a kind, serene expression. She wears a white button-up blouse with subtle textured patterns, small earrings, and a distinctive beaded necklace featuring dark and light beads. A small silver dragonfly brooch is pinned to the left side of her blouse, symbolizing her pioneering work on DNA damage repair (often likened to cellular "rescue" mechanisms). The natural daylight softly illuminates her face, highlighting her dignified and approachable presence as a trailblazing scientist and a Lasker Award and National Medal of Science recipient. The overall mood is one of quiet wisdom, resilience, and quiet celebration of a long, impactful career in #WomenInScience. #WomensHistoryMonth

Geneticist Evelyn Witkin (b. #OTD 1921) pioneered work on DNA damage repair & mutagenesis.

Her discovery of the SOS response revealed how cells actively respond to genetic threats, laying foundations for insights into cancer, aging, radiation effects & chemotherapy resistance. #WomenInSTEM #WHM

To be clear: Signal’s encryption and infrastructure have not been compromised and remain robust. These attacks were executed via sophisticated phishing campaigns, designed to trick users into sharing information – SMS codes and/or Signal PIN – to gain access to users’ accounts. 2/7

Trumpism Is at War with the Idea of a Citizenry of Equals The regime’s latest racist fury is tied to the Right’s much broader attempt to redefine citizenship and national identity in service of an exclusionary white nationalist

Trump is the perfect avatar for today’s Right and their anti-egalitarian, anti-pluralistic project that runs on radicalizing grievance.

The white nationalism, the patriarchal domination, the oligarchic control, the Christian supremacism: They are all tied together.

Honestly, I am absolutely disgusted by academics suggesting that AI can do the reading and writing for you. At a certain point, what you're bragging about is fraud. And in a broader sense, what you're contributing to is the erosion of knowledge and the destruction of trust in academic publishing.
