The architectural world lost one of its heavy weights, Sir Terry Farrell.

It was his use of the diagram, and in particular colourful diagrams, to communicate design concepts/ intent, that was most influential on me.

He had a way of capturing the essence of a project using bold gestures and flare.

Divisive politics will always went out in a populous world. That’s because you have a villain (the others) and you have a hero, the defender of those being (supposedly) oppressed. Politics of inclusion and shared benefits doesn’t work in today’s society. Sad state.

I’ve always said paint isn’t architecture. But, I’ll admit, colour is crucial. It shapes how we experience buildings and places. It can be bold or subtle, dramatic with lighting or calming in daylight. Often, colour can make or break the success of a space.

There’s definitely much to learn from these kinds of examples. I’ve seen similar in Tokyo and Shanghai. Makes me think about the potential of what’s happening on Geary Street in TO. These can become quite interesting, diverse, beyond just destinations, turning into livable organic neighborhoods.

Street festival? I’m in! A beautiful night yesterday for the end-of-the-month Night Market. Food, music, games, artisans, all against the backdrop of giant warehouses and industrial bldgs. A reminder that #events are the lifeblood of cities. #WindsorCanada

How do you keep an old historic market fresh in the face of competition from newer “food courts“?

It takes a mixture of old traditional vendors and new contemporary vendors, keeping up the authenticity while also keeping up with the times.

The new Apple Store in Detroit reminded me of Dieter Rams, Braun’s legendary designer and a major influence on Apple. Known for minimalism, clever use of materials, and even playfulness, his work spans from audio equip to shavers to my fave watch. A timeless ethos for any designer.

From the early anchors of Sugar Beach and the George Brown College buildings to the new additions of the extended waterfront promenade and community center, along with the new timber construction Limberlost building, the #toronto east bayfront is becoming its own unique place.

Urban design is a process of creating an environment. AI is a process towards creating an image. For the future, Urban Designers can choose to reject or direct, AI.

#MidsizeCities (100k–400k) sit between bigcity scale and smalltown focus. They often inherit cultural and economic legacies but struggles to sustain them. Evolution takes vision and leadership. That is the way.

We tout the importance of walkable neighbourhoods, but the question needs to be asked:
Who really lives in walkable communities?

A great highlight of #detroit as the venue for the Tonight Show last night. From the beauty of the Opera House interior to the energy on the streets, the city showed well. The excitement from the aftermath of the Lions dominating football victory before the taping set the stage for a special night.

What’s ‘The Most Walkable City on Earth’? We often create complex metrics for determining walkability of districts and cities. Sometimes, for a city center, could just a measurement of proximity of attractions be enough (from a tourist’s perspective)? 🤔

I’m not usually big on corner balconies, they often take away from the view on the interior. But, in the case of this building, the narrow balcony helps to accentuate the corner and provides a panoramic viewing of the major avenue and the side street. A well articulated condition. #globalurbanstudy

A slight #designdiversion . Cameras.

I’ve always been a fan of the design of cameras, especially the vintage cameras circa 1930s/ 40s. These two caught my eye in a photo gallery a while back. The Minolta on the left rivals the likes of the iconic Leica camera in retro style.

Pretty cool stuff.
