5/5 The Greens didnโt do as badly as many would have us believe. They fared better in many places than in the federal election earlier this year. In my home turf of Mรผnster, they even came first with more than 31 per cent of the vote and are poised to win the mayoral run-off in two weeksโ time.

4/5 In the few AfD strongholds, working toward overcoming the structural causes of rising AfD support seems wiser than pursuing an overzealous cordon sanitaire strategy. Focus on effective policies rather than trying to make sure that no decision will ever be taken with AfD support!

3/5 Better policies to overcome the dismal conditions in places like Gelsenkirchen are the best counter strategy against the AfD. We need more federal and regional money and a no-nonsense approach to learning from more successful cases of economic transformation like Lille, Bilbao, or Manchester.

2/5 Despite the overall trend, the AfD did make significant inroads in a few run-down cities in the Ruhr area, NRWโs former industrial heartland, confirming the general tendency that the populist radical right does best in areas marked by economic, infrastructural, and demographic decline.

Five lessons from the local elections in NRW - a ๐งต
1/5 There was no blue wave. The AfD fared worse than in the federal election earlier this year. The party didnโt even have enough people to put up candidates everywhere. The AfD has established itself, but it is still much weaker than elsewhere.

I know I'm a bit late to the party but now that I finally made it to BlueSky, I want to take the opportunity to promote this cool new piece on unelected representation by @andreavik.bsky.social, @pieterdewilde.bsky.social, @leneaaroe.bsky.social and myself in @bjpols.bsky.social

Friends don't let friends give preregistration a bad name. Exploratory findings are fine; you just have to label them!

Threats to social status and support for far-right political parties
How economic threats to social status in the form of unemployment risk and rental market risk affects support for the far right in Europe.
I wrote a longer essay on how social status matters for far-right support. Many still wrongly associate the far right with the economically left behind. Taking social status seriously also cautions against the idea that deliverism will win back far-right voters.

The University of Cologne plans drastic cuts to its Political Science department, potentially abolishing the MSc in Political Science and eliminating the professorships in IR and Comparative Politics. This would severely weaken the social sciences at @unicologne.bsky.social.
