Painting by artist Piero della Francesca's Nativity at The National Gallery shows how the semi precious stone lapis lazuli was used for the most spiritually relevant aspects of a painting- Madonna and infant christ and angels. Lapis Lazuli/ ultramarine paint was more precious than gold.
In Renaissance Europe, ultramarine BLUE pigment/paint was made by grinding lapis lazuli - rarer than gold. Reserved for Madonnas and skies, its rarity gave it a reverence that lingers. Blue is the colour of sky, drawing our gaze upward and invites contemplation.
