Why plant aspen if beavers are just going to fell it? Because the same beavers sometimes seen as a threat to aspen are also the ones stimulating regeneration, by encouraging aspen to resprout, produce seeds and spread.

Aspen can produce millions of seeds – but in Scotland, flowering is rare and seed production even rarer. So it clones itself instead, sending up suckers from its roots. That helps it persist, but not spread. With more planting, aspen could flourish in Scotland.

In 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘏𝘶𝘮𝘣𝘭𝘦 𝘗𝘦𝘵𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘰𝘧 𝘉𝘳𝘶𝘢𝘳 𝘞𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘳 (1787), Robert Burns gave voice to a river asking for its banks to be re-wooded. Written as a plea to the Duke of Atholl, the poem was acted upon and the banks of Bruar Water were replanted. Sometimes, rewilding begins with a poem.
