A Robber Fly grasping its hoverfly prey from behind and still with its proboscis in the hoverfly's back. I found these two on some path-side bracken in the woodland at RSPB Minsmere, on the east coast of the UK.
A closer look at the same scene
A scene I'd been hoping to find for some time and finally got the chance back in the summer at RSPB Minsmere. This Robber Fly was preoccupied enough to let me get a few stacked shots before flying off.

A recent bucket-lister findπ. A Green Huntsman (Micrommata virescens) female guarding her egg sac π.
Luckily, she'd made her retreat under some bracken and I could turn it over without causing any damage.

30.06.2025 06:15 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Amazing creatures π. Thanks for the info - I'd heard about the formic acid but assumed it was from the tubes that extend from their 'tail'. I can see the slit below their head in the photo.

Hi James. These were with the OM System 90mm macro. I previously used a Laowa 100mm macro on my Canon EF set up which was a great lens although all manual.

Successful hunting for these two Thomisus onustus from Dorset. I love the variation in colour of these spiders - everything from white, through various shades of pink, deep burgundy and purple or even bright yellowπ©·π€ππ

I've been waiting for the rain to fill mine up so I can finish the edges. Immediate impact on biodiversity! First pondskater a couple of days ago. Today - mosquito larvae, two water beetle species, a water boatman, damselflies and a Broad-bodied Chaser π. No plants yet so just a big puddle really!

A rather special 'rhubarb-and-custard' Thomisus onustus spider I found a couple of weeks ago. I haven't adjusted the colours - she really was that bright (see the last pic taken on my phone)

Hi Rosy π
Dorset WT just forwarded your email to me. Looks really interesting and I'll be in touch.
Yes you do. These are quite variable in colour and this one was particularly light. I do wonder whether things look different to flying insects, though, if they're able to see in uv. The colour match may not look right to us but may be spot on for passing bees and moths.
04.06.2025 06:55 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Hi Tom. Thanks for an idea for the moth. Moths aren't my strong point, but I think you might be right. It's definitely the right habitat.

I'm sure there will be. Too many places to go and not enough time π. I was over in Purbeck all day hunting for any early Heather Crab Spiders.
