It's little over a week since we launched our petition asking Labour leader Chris Hipkins to take a stand against seabed mining. More than 5,200 people have already signed the petition! Chris Hipkins has responded already, saying Labour opposes seabed mining.

Fun, simple and symbolic. But in the fervour against Musk, has nobody clocked the unfortunate parallel symbolism of a fossil-fuel-powered military machine crushing an electric car?? A car that not so many years ago was celebrated as a symbol of climate-change-conscious innovation?

There's nothing quite as dispiriting as presenting a concept and video script to a bunch of people who just look at their laptops the whole time. I'm so, so, over this industry. Somehow, some way, change is coming. Watch this space.

It's early days of course, but this gives me a glimmer of hope.

After all, in the current economic climate, a job in the military is still a job... contributing taxes, career development, confidence and prospects for young people, and the overflow into the rest of the country through through contractors and employment of civilian staff and contractors etc.

How much can NZ boost its military spending, really? And is it really needed? Analysis: New Zealand is being urged to spend 2% of GDP on defence, but is that possible and would it make a difference?
