Farmers off the hook on climate means rest of us pick up the slack

Comment: The Government's methane announcement is the policy equivalent of a steaming cowpat on cross-partisan climate consensus.

The Gen X Career Meltdown Just when they should be at their peak, experienced workers in creative fields find that their skills are all but obsolete.

This is very US-centric, but this article hits home so many times with me. I struggle to fathom what's next for me but I can't keep puddling around doing cut-rate design/photo gigs hoping that a meaningful, permanent role will materialise. www.nytimes.com/interactive/...

Leaked files reveal China is using AI to erase history of Tiananmen Square massacre Hundreds of pages of classified documents leaked to the ABC have offered an unprecedented glimpse into China's infamous censorship regime.

Let's all make sure we 'flood the zone' of our own social feeds on June 4, to keep true history trending.

"...Their [māori] knowledge of environmental management, which dates back hundreds to tens of thousands of years, is something we must learn from." Yes, but not dogmatically. But I feel pointing out this historical glitch is seen as racist or colonial.

Return of the huia? Why Māori worldviews must be part of the β€˜de-extinction’ debate Colossal Biosciences successful resurrection of dire wolves raises a raft of ethical questions.

Fascinating article with some great rationale. But the elephant in the room - and the fact the article glibly sidesteps - continues to be that all species of Moa (and the Haast eagle) went extinct BEFORE European colonisation.

It's little over a week since we launched our petition asking Labour leader Chris Hipkins to take a stand against seabed mining. More than 5,200 people have already signed the petition! Chris Hipkins has responded already, saying Labour opposes seabed mining.

Fun, simple and symbolic. But in the fervour against Musk, has nobody clocked the unfortunate parallel symbolism of a fossil-fuel-powered military machine crushing an electric car?? A car that not so many years ago was celebrated as a symbol of climate-change-conscious innovation?

There's nothing quite as dispiriting as presenting a concept and video script to a bunch of people who just look at their laptops the whole time. I'm so, so, over this industry. Somehow, some way, change is coming. Watch this space.

Some call me perfectionist, but far worse are newlyweds (i.e. wedding photography) and musicians (i.e. music videos). With stings more than the muso's poor-artist-zero-budget, is how they take all your energy and generosity... but then never even use or publish the video. What are your 'red lines'?

It's 5 years since I arrived back in Aotearoa! Swapping UK lockdown for the NZ one... took this quick time-lapse of London, not knowing when I'd be back... literal & symbolic water under the bridge.

I'll never regret being here with my mum those final two years of her life, but I do miss the UK.

Indeed! Different times and technology though. Perhaps aircraft with more 'teeth' would be handy in a more pragmatic way (e.g. helicopters that could be transported easier to peacekeeping zone). From what I recall the Skyhawks fired their guns in anger just once in 30 years

After all, in the current economic climate, a job in the military is still a job... contributing taxes, career development, confidence and prospects for young people, and the overflow into the rest of the country through through contractors and employment of civilian staff and contractors etc.

How much can NZ boost its military spending, really? And is it really needed? Analysis: New Zealand is being urged to spend 2% of GDP on defence, but is that possible and would it make a difference?

An interesting angle on this debate. I think we could definitely do with an increase in spending on military salaries, infrastructure, etc, to retain and recruit talented NZDF people. www.rnz.co.nz/news/politic...
