It should be specific though (eg. just full length books, work over a certain pay amount, or specific types of gigs.) I'd be wary if the agent just wants a cut of everything.
Agents have fees, yes. But in my experience, they negotiate a higher payout than I can, that way more than covers that.
It's pretty standard for agents to get a cut of some things they didn't bring in as gigs. Having an agent *relationship* is theoretically that it works both ways. A really good agent will get you work...and because of that work, you will/may get other gigs coming your way. >>1/2

Yes agreed. Your art style shouldn’t be the exact same ten years later. Art styles evolve-otherwise artists would get quite bored. So even if u find the perfect style, it’s not one-and-done.

yes, writing a 'gratitude journal' is not the fix-all that the internet might tell you, lol. I'm in the same boat as you for royalties and advances - I enjoy doing kids books but have to separate it from actually making a living.
