Focusing on "contact points" between individuals, objects, locations, time, and ideas in Japan, he delves into the factors that shape Japanese culture, on the point of view how its residents confront the challenges Japan faces. Based in Kyoto & Tokyo.

While cleaning out my childhood home, toys I used to play with as a kid keep turning up, and I can't seem to make any progress.
Only now do I realize I was a typical Japanese child.
Tidying up my childhood home, nostalgic toys keep surfacing and hindering progress.

Riding the first train in a while, I got to see a different view and felt like I gained something priceless. On the Hankyu Railway.

New Year's Day is the time of the Tondo-san festival. Applying the resulting charcoal to your face is for good health. When I was able to have my face painted in an area I had visited many times for photography in Okuizumo, it was like being included in a group.

One more of my favorite spreads from the photo book “x elements かぜとつちと” (published by Akaaka). Hanachozu and Kagura mask. The bearers of festivals and folk performing arts are not artists or specialists, but ordinary people.

Another one of my favorite spreads from the photo book, “x elements かぜとつちと” (published by Akaaka). Iron crystals (tama-hagane made from tatara) and water crystals (snowflakes). In the Unnan Okuizumo region, human activity and the richness of nature coexist.

One of my favorite spreads from the photo book “x elements かぜとつちと” (Akaaka). The left image shows a persimmon that fell in the garden of an abandoned house and was bitten by a beast, and the right image is a scene from when I was allowed to accompany a wild boar hunting trip into the mountains.

A wild boar was found with a leg partially missing. It is said that this is because it was caught in a snare trap and to escape, it tore off or bit off a part of its leg. It seems thin but it will soon get used to it and grow fat.

In areas hit by animal damage, farmers often obtain hunting licenses and set box traps. However, it is not easy to catch them. Some beasts play like a jungle gym.

I was able to set up an infrared camera in an abandoned house and was able to capture the beast gathering to eat berries that had fallen from a persimmon tree in the garden. The raccoon dogs usually have a calm expression on their faces, but..

I came to understand that the issue in depopulated areas is not “the decrease in the number of people and the loss of vitality,” but rather the damage caused by animals. The remaining residents are forced to fight against the beasts.
From my photo book “x elements かぜとつちと” (published by Akaaka)
In order to photograph the beasts that ravage the fields, an expert with damage to the infrared camera said, “Wait two months to see if you get a picture,” but with no difficulty, the boars were in the field within a week.
From the photo exhibition “x elements / Earth” (Nikon Salon, 2024)
“Coexistence is a terrible thing. It's a battle,” said a farmer. Even a stranger like myself feels anger when I see a wild boar ravaging a rice field just before the rice harvest. Of course, the beasts don't mean any harm.

It was a first visit to the shrine this year, or rather, a belated visit to thank the people I had the pleasure of meeting last year. On this day, one year has passed since the Noto Peninsula earthquake.May this year bring peace and tranquility to Japan and the world.
