Libby audiobook 2025 BooK #28 A Memoir in Nine Adventures ζηε¦εοΌ CONNIE WANG Oh My Mother - -β slide for more thoughts rating Listen #21
OH MY MOTHER! BY: CONNIE WANG I'm not sure there was enough material here for a full book. However, it was quick, fun, and enjoyable. I feel like ultimately it is more about the author herself than about her relationship with her mother. There are parts that will make you laugh, but I would have liked more stories about the author's mother.

Cover image of the book The Fetishist with a 4 star rating
THE FETISHIST BY: KATHERINE MIN This was the Shelf Indulgence Book Club March book selection. I was drawn to the cover and curious how the fish was going to tie into the story (it did not disappoint). It wasn't until I started reading that I realized this was published post-humorously by the author's daughter. (If you haven't already read it, I would recommend "White Tears/Brown Scars: How White Feminism Betrays Women of Color" by Ruby Hamad as a great non-fiction companion piece to this book). (swipe to continue ---> )
THE FETISHIST BY: KATHERINE MIN "When someone dies, our impulse is to flatten her out, to press her between wax paper like a leaf, or to fix her in amber like a bug. Death as capture, death as collected works. But death is a false terminus, one moment only. It seems more significant because it is the last moment, the most recent, when really it is the smallest and least telling. Life is the plumpness of all directions, of surprises and contradictions, of impulses, mistakes, duplicities, and redemptions. While the vanishing point on the horizon line is a dot, a blip, the same for us all."

This was an enjoyable rom-com all about defining what a rom-com is should be. It's like a warm bath for your brain, a temporary escape from the world. THE ROM-COMMERS BY: KATHERINE CENTER "If you wait for other people to light you up, then I guess you're at the mercy of darkness."

Cover image of the audiobook Four Squares with a 4 start rating.
FOUR SQUARES BY: BOBBY FINGER I love a good "found family" story and this delivered. It's about community and friendships, as well as grief and loss. It is set in the present day and follows our main character Artie while he is dealing with some changes in his life. However, you will also be transported back to NYC in 1992 as he reflects back on his life and the people he has been close to along the way. "That's what the book is about right? The pleasure of finding your people."

THE LUMINARIES BY: ELEANOR CATTON This was not at all what I expected after having read Birnam Wood by the same author. Do you remember that icky feeling you would get when watching Deadwood? You could wrap your head around the fact that the racism and misogyny was "period appropriate" but it still made you hella uncomfortable. This book gives off the same general vibe. If this wasn't the SIBC pick for February I likely would have DNFed it. It kind of put me in a reading slump this month because for the around the first 400-500 pages or so l was just not invested in the story or the characters. (swipe to continue --> )
THE LUMINARIES BY: ELEANOR CATTON It did pick up at the end, and I am glad I stuck it out and finished it, but not enough to bring it up the 3 star "I liked it." rating. I also do not know enough about astrology to really pick up on the astrological stereotypes of the characters. Maybe someone more well-acquainted with horoscopes and star charts would find it more enjoyable. "If I have learned one thing from experience, it is this: never underestimate how extraordinarily difficult it is to understand a situation from another person's point of view."
