"Thomas Hobbs writes about late Detroit beatmaker J Dilla’s unparalleled genius and how he inspired generation-after-generation of producers to move at their own pace."
J Dilla’s Music Will Always Sound Like the Future:
'Pac, Ice T, and Cube recording "Last Wordz" in '92 at Westlake Studios.
A great moment in Angeleno history
"No two characters were alike. And once she’d dug into them, she was so committed that you you stopped thinking of what she was doing as a performance and started to feel as if you were just watching a person being themselves. A bizarre person, that is."

instead of listening to Post Malone you could just revisit this @passionweiss.bsky.social banger: www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/po...
know there's nothing any of us can do about it but I really resent this drip drip feed of Epstein files, around two to four days a month will apparently forever be dedicated to thinking about powerful creeps and paedophiles but hohoho we don't know which ones! it's always a surprise! just very grim
A guide through Erick Sermon's legendary catalogue from early EPMD to Redman's "Whut? Thee Album," to producing for Roger Troutman and Shaq, the classic Marvin Gaye flip on "Music" & his latest "Dynamic Duos."

MJ Lenderman's cover of "Dancing In The Club" was the song I listened to the most this year BY FAR. It still brings me great joy, and it is No. 1 on my personal songs list, which entirely comprises artists who weren't on our staff album and song lists.
I spoke to rap legend Curren$y about his love for the Sega Genesis & Ecco the Dolphin.

Launching an editorial series as a creative director is a big moment for my career and I put everything into this, so pls support and share!
At its core, this piece of writing is about how video games are often a sanctuary for working class boys.

Check out @thobbsjourno.bsky.social's interview with Hit-Boy, one of the defining hip-hop producers of his generation
trying to use this account more. the other place is pretty evil
visited billboard's greatest pop stars podcast's vintage pop stars ed. to argue that d'angelo is It in the year 2000 and crow that what gets to be called pop is often a reduction of something that doesn't enjoy the same distinction
Keeping the ball rolling this week at CABBAGES with some thoughts on Westside Gunn's latest project, plus reviews of new albums by Crimeapple and Wave Generators. www.cabbageshiphop.com/westside-gun...
The 90s were awash in ridiculous rap talent but the Wu roster was truly special. Yes RZA in the studio knew how to get the best out of each and every member, but the raw talent spread amongst them was something else. Chef doesn't get nearly enough love for how brilliant he is.
you're too kind my friend. thank you for reading. might be my favourite interview i ever did / we just connected so naturally
My man @thobbsjourno.bsky.social is out here talking to legends!
www.stereogum.com/2321791/raek...
I interviewed the legend Raekwon for @stereogum. We spoke about his Dad's Indian heritage, Cuban Linx 3, why the Wu-Tang are like King Arthur's Knights, rap needing to elevate prisoners, and sneaking veal steak into prison.

The Hero of Twilight
Great piece, and delighted to have found @thobbsjourno.bsky.social again after all this time!
I would add that the way Herrmann articulates his string writing - with down bow strokes on every stabbing beat - makes the orchestra reenact the murder itself, and makes them complicit in Bates's crimes.
A great read! 👇
‘How PSYCHO’s terrifying music changed film forever’ by @thobbsjourno.bsky.social via BBC Culture: www.bbc.com/culture/arti...
I wrote about the genius of Bernard Herrmann for BBC Culture, focusing on his score for 1960's Psycho, which bailed out Hitchcock.
I'm proud this writing shows how the dread of the era crept into Herrmann's sound and details his influence on rap.
