Legal challenge fails to stop contentious Sḵwx̱wú7mesh floatel — but affirms women’s rights Court rejects judicial review challenge by Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Elder and Youth. But as Woodfibre applies for a second cruise-ship work camp, fears of gender-based violence remain high

Today, District of Squamish is voting on whether to allow a second LNG floatel — bringing 900 more workers to Átl’ḵa7tsem (Howe Sound).

I covered it, and the recent court case that gave the first one the green light. Must-read via @indiginews.bsky.social:

Just watched the new 2025 National Geographic documentary, Ocean with David Attenborough — highly recommend.
It finally dives into how messed up global fisheries are, with some seriously disturbing footage of commercial fishing in action. Not at all easy to watch, but so important.

🐋 Grey whales weren’t always here.
But now, they’re arriving in huge numbers during the herring spawn. In Sheet’ká, fishers and whales are sharing the harvest — under mounting pressure.

Everyone in #Vancouver should read this book by @garthmullins.bsky.social — and so should anyone touched by the toxic drug crisis or convinced they have an opinion about it. And if you don’t believe me, grab a copy of Megaphone and let me persuade you straight from the page.

Grace Chen has led the DTES’s Ovaltine Café through grief, fire, and a pandemic — and she’s still dreaming bigger.
Now, she’s talking merch, catering, maybe even a restaurant school. Read this local legend’s story by James Witwicki over at @megaphonemagazine.com.

Spent the wkd reading @garthmullins.bsky.social’s Crackdown memoir. A must-read for anyone wanting to understand the “war on drugs” from the inside — raw, unflinching, + deeply human. With the fed election coming, it’s essential context for what’s at stake in drug policy and who’s being left behind.

'B.C.'s' expected rent supplements for Youth from child welfare system not paid in more than a year, sources say ‘I’m not surviving,’ says Indigenous 19-year-old denied SAJE rental assistance who can ‘barely cover’ rent

After digging, @indiginews.bsky.social discovered that young adults from foster care haven't received a single dollar from MCFD's legislated SAJE program for rent support in over a year. "I'm not surviving," one youth told us. "I have so many problems."
