Omg the chair picture

A three panel illustration. Panel 1 is cast in dark blue light. A head lies sideways against the ground. What little we can see of the eye is blank but bright. Lifeless. Behind, in the background is the body it used to be attached to. Text reads: 'They killed me for nothing.' Panel 2 is a close up of a bloodied hand holding a box cutter. It is a new scene. Text reads: 'But that's okay.' Panel 3 pulls out to show us the full scene. The box cutter and the hand it's attached to belongs to the body of a school girl, in her sweater and plaid skirt. Presumably the same girl as in panel 1. The difference is that now she has a giant teddy bear mascot head on her neck. She stands in a hallway lined with pictures, cast in greens, golds, and reds. A great horror. As an angry Viet woman who also had a difficult, complex relationship with my dad, this hit home in a lot of ways. Tran really captured that particular flavour of stoic Asian dad who glosses over the hurt they've caused you and will just completely ignore the anger you fling at him

I'm always going to be a fiction writer primarily, but with some of the things I've been thinking about, truth hidden in fiction doesn't feel like enough for expressing it

Art has always been my outlet to work out my emotions. Although none of my characters are self-inserts, they usually carry a piece of my emotional struggles.

I think it's cos nowadays, I feel like I'm going around with so many different things hanging over me: the weight of new responsibilities, fear of the future, the fear of mistakes, worrying over the state of the world

I usually prefer writing fiction to autobio, but a lot of things have been happening in my life lately, and I've had so many thoughts and feelings that I want to draw/write about. Not just The Black Cloud sequel exploring mental health, but stuff on racism, family history and cultural expectations

Same! In the UK, we had a kids' cartoon show called Grizzly Tales for Gruesome Kids, and the host character specifically scared the hell outta me, but I still watched it every time it was on

On a slightly different note, many kids also love gruesome and scary stuff, even if it does scare them. Kids would be terrified of creatures like the Weeping Angels in Doctor Who but still avidly watch it. Kids are far too often underestimated about what they can take

Kids live in this world and know and see more than we think
But even if they don’t live through the hardships life can throw around, fiction is a great way to explore emotions like fear or grief and everything life has to offer in a safe space. Learn to deal with them.
