Interpreting Marx anew as an ethical thinker, Absolute Ethical Life by @michaellazarus.bsky.social⬠provides resources for understanding how freedom & rational agency are impacted by a social world formed by value under capitalism, with consequences for philosophy today

I also enjoyed the Postone inspired points in the article.
03.06.2025 18:38 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I liked it too β I think they mean the continued interest in Postone and perhaps Heinrichβs influence on the new Capital edition. Maybe even the popularity of Mau?

Tomorrow at Unnameable Books!
02.06.2025 12:16 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0"In order to understand it we must first be clear what it is for men to make their own history, for men to act and not just to suffer. So the concept of human action is central to our enquiry." /2
Alasdair MacIntyre, Notes from the Moral Wilderness
"'Men make their own history, but,' this phrase echoes through the Marxist classics. The political aim of Marxists is to liquidate that 'but'. Their theoretical aim is to understand it. /1
27.05.2025 01:20 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I'm discussing Absolute Ethical Life on 03 June -- the offical release date -- with Emma Fajgenbaum at Unnameable Books in Brooklyn.
26.05.2025 21:34 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0"ever since the days when I was privileged to be a contributor to that most remarkable journal The New Reasoner, I had been preoccupied with the question of the basis for the moral rejection of Stalinism." MacIntyre in After Virtue
23.05.2025 22:03 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Did I mention that ABSOLUTE ETHICAL LIFE includes a terrific chapter on Alasdair MacIntyre?!?
"[MacIntyreβs] journey from Marxism is less a reactionary departure and more a story of his thinking through of modernity in terms already indicated in his earlier Marxist work."
The project that eventually became Absolute Ethical Life was initially going to be an assessment of Alasdair MacIntyre's relationship to Marx's thought. In the book, there's a dedicated chapter to MacIntyre but throughout he's always very close to the concerns at hand:
23.05.2025 18:36 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0"The separation of morality from history, from desire discovered through the discovery of that common human nature which history shows as emerging, leaves morality without any basis."
Alasdair MacIntyre's "Notes From the Moral Wilderness."
Alastair MacIntyre taught us what modern moral philosophy could be. He will be missed.

14.05.2025 18:01 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0"What emerges from Marxβs Capital is an account of capitalism as a form of life which is constituted by social relations of domination that restrict in fundamental ways the ability of human beings to recognise each other as free and rational beings in a social world of our own creation."
