Katie Wilson's Success in Seattle Shows Again that Urbanism Is A Winning Campaign Issue β Streetsblog USA
The transit advocate's strong early performance in Seattle's mayoral primary is rekindling a national conversation about the power of bold transportation reform to win at the ballot box.
I don't think it's a coincidence that so many mayoral candidates are running on platforms that unapologetically promise to give people great mobility options besides driving β and they're winning their primaries by *massive* margins. Wrote about urbanism as a campaign issue in Seattle & beyond.

Also I feel like there's no coverage and crossover. East Flour always felt like those in the know only (not in an ironic cool way that gets enough to sustain).

I think a food court scene or maybe food truck scene with popups would create better fertile ground for newer stuff. Right now it feels like there are growing options but some of that are less well-known chains.

This is also why the news reports wondering if more service was needed after congestion pricing was implemented was innumerate. All that physicality of car congestion looks impressive but in reality it is such a small relative proportion of cross-Hudson commuting.

10% decrease to the 10% that were driving is only 1%. Big changes to driving is small relative to the 90% on transit already.
Also leap year last year plus strike this year is about 1%. And most cross-Hudson is buses and PATH. So it is easy for any shifts to show up as a measurement error.

Fans of regional Chinese cuisines - do you consider Jersey City to be at least a secondary regional dining destination yet? What does it still need to get to the next level? It seems like the growth especially over the past year has been impressive.

That's a good way of putting it. Lack of awareness / willingness to engage in anti-social behavior. Whereas speeding can be the result of herd behavior depending on where it is happening.

It seems it'd be possible to build AI cameras that detect vehicles not yielding to pedestrians and not using turn signals at intersections. Have a human review, but it makes sense that speed cameras are both really effective and not enough at the same time. A workaround for speed camera prohibition?

Very interesting truck driver dataset. Speeding is predictive of a future crash, but most predictive are:
1. Failure to yield and (2.4X)
2. Failure to use / improper signal violations (2.2X)
I would guess a lot actually does apply to regular drivers too: truckingresearch.org/wp-content/u...

Why building more homes near transit will transform lives across California | Opinion
California cities have largely banned apartments and condos, preventing people from living near jobs and transit systems their taxes fund.
"Iβm old enough to remember when teachers lived near schools and nurses near hospitals. That didnβt change because of their preferences β it changed because we banned the housing they could afford." calmatters.org/commentary/2...

Andrew Cuomo's new logo is, unfortunately, a second-rate version of this branding I created with @eleanalittle.bsky.social for her city council campaign here in Jersey City (incidentally, the actual home of the Statue of Liberty).

We're still a few weeks away from the candidate filing deadline, but the Jersey City council elections in November will have a bit of a clown car effect, with many candidates in each race creating a high degree of uncertainty, especially in races without incumbents.

Yeah looks like you're right. We should ask them to open it on weekends. There are so many people, and it has to be a very minor cost savings if at all.

Is it? There's no sign about that on the platform. But if I'm corresponding it to the right ground level sign, it's supposed to be open every day and close at 10pm in the evening.

PATH also just closed one of the main 33rd St exits during the day with no signs, no announcements, no construction. Cruelly and pointlessly tacks on another 5 minutes to every rider's trip that was going to head out that side.

Something that feels like a Jerseyism is the amount of artificial turf used here. I even see people throw it on tree pits as if to be helpful. It is very weird to me purely on aesthetic grounds.

PATH has unexpected delays again. The countdowns are run with the temperament of a two-year old that doesn't want to go home. WTC said 0 minutes. Then it said 4 minutes which is impossible since the trains can't arrive at the same time. Then finally Delay after it blew past the 4 minutes as well.

More seriously, I looked up DC and Baltimore's murder rate. Baltimore sees 200-350 murders a year? And even DC's murder rate is 10 times that of Hudson County? Should be a national shame.
