Of all the things we are doing in MN, this one is just beyond. Imagine being released from hell alone in the cold. And a total stranger has waited all night with a blanket just to be ready to hug you and carry you home. Every job we do is crucial, but this one is what restores humanity and dignity.

If they always suspend students for missing class, sure. If this is greater punishment than the school would normally give for missing class, then it is a problem.

Just going to point out again that our arbitrary political rules permit Republicans to attack urban areas with impunity but strictly forbid the faintest whiff of condescension toward rural areas by Democrats

i’ll end this little brainstorm by just asking what it is, exactly, that the MAGA right likes about the United States, since it explicitly rejects those things that make this nation distinctive — its pluralism, its revolutionary heritage and egalitarian aspirations, and its republican institutions

f the law is going to claim to be a self-regulating profession, it has to ban the lawyers in DHS who made such a willful misreading of “arriving aliens,” ban all the lawyers who defended and enabled the actions of ICE, and the AUSAs who played along.

On top of what we do to ICE/DHS directly.

The guy who sang that turns out to be a creep? Huh

I don’t really know what I expect in posting this, but maybe some people see it and can learn from it.

I’ll call it “lessons from an unwilling immigration attorney.”

As powerful a visual as one can imagine about how insincere “tough on crime” types are when they claim they put victims first.

They only see victims as useful tools for advancing their desire to engage in punitive social control.

Victims who do not advance that goal don’t count.

Worth watching this in full. The statement is more powerful than this quote alone. Here is is from USA Today, with alt text.

Also! Rich Ruohonen is a personal injury lawyer and the oldest athlete to ever represent the United States in a Winter Games at 54 years old.

I'm hardly the first person to note this, but it's enormously instructive that our President and his followers saw the message "THE ONLY THING MORE POWERFUL THAN HATE IS LOVE" and understood it, correctly, as an attack on them

kind of funny that an olympian said they are here to represent "compassion, respect, and love for others" and some people automatically knew that was a statement against them

Many of the schools in Houston Texas walked out this afternoon to protest against ICE.
When one student was asked if he was afraid of being marked absent or suspended his response was ‘if that’s what it takes to protect people and use my first amendment rights, I’m ok with that’.
Be like these kids!

the stupid 'talent is a gatekeeping mechanism' thread that's going around, three posts reading:
tired of having these arguments so i'm gonna lay out the STARK reality of AI for some of you privileged fucks:

1. "talent" is a gatekeeping mechanism that has created a culture of professionalism that is no less of an ivory tower than academia, a moralized proxy for access to time, training, money.

2. being poor means having to make hard choices like:

[a] drawing something yourself in a way society would call "bad" (i.e. unprofessional)

[b] sacrificing resources you don't have to pay a real artist what they're worth (or learn yourself)

[c] not doing it at all, or

[d] using AI.

“just don’t use AI” is a luxury position. when people moralize choices made under scarcity, they’re pretending the menu is the same for everyone. it fucking isn’t.

no great artists have ever struggled, a famous thing about artists that we all know. everyone prior to three years ago lived lives of luxury.

Exactly. I worry that the use of AI means the author is not doing the intellectual work to fully understand the issue, their position, their position’s weakness, the best counter-arguments the other side might make, etc. If a writing sample used AI, the candidate better explain how it was used.

All in all, while Le's frustrated asides got the most attention, this hearing is most shocking for how little control there is over ICE. Even an experienced and respected AUSA like Anna Voss can't get them within a mile of compliance.

Are these districts court nominees? Because if so, part of their upcoming job will be to deal with witnesses who refuse to answer questions. They might have to order those witnesses to answer or hold those witnesses in contempt. I wish the Senator would ask them how could do that part of the job

I just read your article and largely agree with it. A frustrating (for defense attorneys) reality in sex crime trials seems to be another example. Evidence that in any other context would be too unreliable to be admissible is routinely allowed in these trials.
