Universities tend to find the least efficient way to do most things. This sounds a lot like the "we can't accept this, it's the old form" kind of thing that I see (note: the old form includes all the information that the new form has).

This weekend Darwin's wet season rain will likely reach 2000 mm. Wow. As much of northern Australia is flooded, or in flood watch, more rains to come... #dataviz #hydrology

Hmm. It's a bit hard to see what I do most of my research on. Oh wait, IT'S GROUNDWATER!

AI hasn't led to massive increases in efficiency? Perhaps it's because of the soul crushing admin that
takes up 120% of working hours...

I do use AI, & I do think there's efficiency gains. I'd give it all back for a 50% reduction in pointless admin tasks. #AcademicSky

Record flooding in the NT goes under the radar - ABC listen The NT Cattlemen's Association says the lack of a Tennant Creek radar, meant stations were "making decisions in the dark" during this week's severe flood event.

The lack of radar coverage in the Northern Territory amazes me with the frequency of flooding up here. Not all decisions should be based on population density...

Temporally clustered streamflow events control focused groundwater recharge in drylands Temporally clustered streamflow events control focused groundwater recharge in drylands, Rau, Gabriel C, BastΓas Espejo, JosΓ©, Acworth, R Ian, Andersen, Martin S, Irvine, Dylan J, Bernardi, Tony, Cuthbert, Mark O

What drives #groundwater recharge in arid regions? #OpenAccess paper led by @hydrogeoscience.bsky.social shows that groups of smaller rain events are more important than one off large events. Implications for climate change. πŸ§ͺ @charlesdarwinuni.bsky.social

Assessing seasonal river-wetland connectivity using remote sensing-based monitoring in tropical environments Understanding the timing of river-floodplain wetland connection is critical for anticipating ecological risks, including aquatic fauna strandings. In …

Please check out our #openaccess paper published in Ecological Indicators that provides an approach to inform lateral connectivity between #rivers and #wetlands using #RemoteSensing. Codes to apply the approach are provided.

This paper about Global Subsidence of #River Deltas looks great, and I'm keen to read it. However, I think it should be illegal to use the word "global" if #Australia is not included. πŸ§ͺ

Academia's a funny game. In 2026 I've had a paper accepted (yay) and seen a paper based on an idea I discussed with someone at a conference (boo). It wasn't my idea, but the paper included someone that I've collaborated with in the past. Thought I may have gotten involved. Oh well... #academicsky

Ha. Stokes says teams may have "worked out Bazball". Sit back and watch you destroy chances of winning is a pretty simple strategy.

The thing is, the same thing happened (same brand) last year. I don't want what they're selling. I've learnt my lesson.

After using almost an entire roll of gaffer tape in an attempt to keep them together, this is the final state of my shitty Hard Yakka boots after a week's fieldwork in the desert. Utter garbage of a product. Never again πŸ’©πŸ§ͺ

Orange desert sand and blue sky with large storm clouds. Near Devil's Marbles Australia

The views are stunning in central Australia. Far from the worst place to do work. As a guide, the Devil's Marbles Hotel is AWESOME! πŸ˜ŽπŸ‘

Southern hemisphere, so, summer. To be fair it's 40Β°C (in the shade), so, I'd guess that some of the sand might get to 50 Β°C...

I'm a slow learner. Here are 2024 and 2025 photos of my boots that melted during fieldwork (to be fair, in the desert in Nov/Dec). Hard Yakka boots... Never again. 🀬

As far as I'm concerned, they can keep it up as long as they want. What a complete and utter joke. Literally the dumbest way to play test cricket... A point that they regularly demonstrate.

Iran’s president calls for moving its drought-stricken capital amid a worsening water crisis – how Tehran got into water bankruptcy Iran’s sprawling cities and irrigated agriculture, along with tight market controls, have left the country vulnerable to drought. There are steps that would help.

Following extreme #water shortages caused by #drought and decades of over extraction, there are serious discussions around evacuating Tehran, a city of 10 million people. theconversation.com/irans-presid... πŸ§ͺπŸ’§

Sound of lightning captured on Mars β€” but it's nothing like on Earth Microphone recordings from NASA's Perseverance rover have turned up more than 50 instances of lightning on the red planet over the past four years, a new study finds.

I normally don't find news from Mars that interesting (I'd prefer that we focus on understanding #Earth), but even I think that lightning on #Mars is very interesting ⚑πŸ§ͺ www.abc.net.au/news/science...

Graph of cumulative rainfall showing the current year is beyond th 95th percentile for this time of year.

It's been a wet start to the 2025/26 wet season in #Darwin. Who would have thought that the second-wettest November on record (and it's not over yet) would lead to this? #rain πŸ§ͺπŸ’§

Graph of cumulative rainfall showing Darwin at its 95th percentile for mid Nov 2025.

It's going to be a wet year in #Darwin. I hope that the storms forming off the coast don't develop into cyclones... We're approaching the 95th percentile for #rain, and it's trending upwards... πŸ§ͺ πŸ’§

Yes, 100x yes.

We got an email this week that was one step worse... "Don't forget about those training sessions on Wed, Thur and Fri next week".

Please *at least* send me the link I have no idea what you are talking about. But yes, a calendar invite is much better.
