Freedom of speech means we accept that people have the right to voice vile ideas. That doesn't mean we have to pretend those ideas aren't vile, or that the person speaking them was not despicable for doing so, or that they are some kind of martyr just because they got murdered doing it.

They are amping up authoritarian spectacle on all fronts. It's a symptom of fear not strength. Like afraid they're running out of time. Shortages and price spikes on the way; widespread, cross-demographic demonstrations already ramping up--I'd be nervous too.

I'd add, "If there's an invasion, why aren't you taking military action against the state that you say is doing it?"
