3) you aren’t obligated to pull shipwrecked sailors out of the water during war. You can’t fire on them.

These actions by the US are completely different than the UK during the Falklands war.

1) it doesn’t matter which direction a ship is sailing during wartime, and anyway the captain of the Belgrano has stated they were maneuvering at the time

2) it was a naval vessel, what else is a light cruiser commanded by a navy officer and staffed with navy seamen

Depends, are you Russian or Israeli?

Russia could stop bleeding out Ukraine immediately.

What does this even mean?

Might want to talk to someone who remembers their admiralty law class.

At least one other boat, the one with the Colombian fisherman, was adrift and displaying a distress signal with its engine out of the water. To attack a disabled vessel in distress and signaling for assistance is basically in the same category as killing shipwrecked survivors clinging to wreckage.

Genetic studies of Arabs show several distinct groups within the larger Arab population. They have different levels of Arabian ancestry that is roughly correlated to distance from the Arabian peninsula. We also have historical records of Arabization of those areas.

It only seems that way to you because you aren’t acknowledging the other ethnoreligions I have brought up.

Are they recognized by other Jews As Jewish?

Huh?

04.12.2025 19:48 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Not being Jewish.

The people in that area didn’t consider themselves Arab at the time. That doesn’t occur until after Islam becomes dominant in the area. Same thing as in North Africa.

Semitic is a linguistic category, not a racial or ethnic one.

04.12.2025 19:40 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Why? No one in those groups thinks they are Jewish.

No

Those kingdoms got wrecked by larger empires.

After another empire wrecked those empires this group of Canaanites split into two groups becoming Jews and Samaritans.

Speed running many centuries of stuff

A group of hill country Canaanites developed a distinctive identity that was separate from the other Canaanites around them.

They ended up with a tiny kingdom and maybe a second tiny kingdom.

04.12.2025 19:37 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Israelites are Canaanites. That’s really clear in the archeological evidence

Jews don’t look at things differently than any other religious group, that’s the reason the ethnoreligion term was coined.

04.12.2025 19:31 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Statistically? Probably. But I don’t think that’s what you mean. Jews are one of the ethnoreligious groups from the Levant (and there are Levantine ethnicities that are ethnoreligions), but not the only one.

04.12.2025 19:29 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

These aren’t things with precise definitions because it’s about people’s understanding of themselves and their communities.

04.12.2025 19:27 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Jews still consider agnostics, atheists as Jewish though and most Jewish atheists and agnostics consider themselves Jewish. Jewish atheists usually have a different relationship with atheism than Christian atheists do with Christianity.

So while the Druze are Arabs they are also Druze. They have distinct customs and practices as well as their religion. So they are an ethno-religious group because their community is defined by being the people who practice the Druze religion and the Druze religion is religion of the Druze people.

Slavs are a good example. Slavic is an ethnic identifier but there are multiple sub-groups of Slavs who all recognize each other as Slavic but also not their particular ethnicity.

04.12.2025 19:13 β€” πŸ‘ 2    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Yazidis are Kurdish speakers.

Ethnicity also isn’t simple unitary catagory. There are sub groups within ethnicities and ethnic groups that have expanded to include people they didn’t originally.

04.12.2025 19:13 β€” πŸ‘ 2    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Other ethnoreligions include Druze, Yazidis, Samaritans, modern Zoroastrianism and anything that doesn’t have a name beyond β€œreligious practices of this people.”

04.12.2025 19:02 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 2    πŸ“Œ 0

Jews aren’t the only ethnoreligion out there. Just the largest by membership. Most religions in the world are ethnoreligions but they are smaller than universal religions like Christianity or Islam.
