Pretty compelling piece overall on who might be best positioned to finally bring the Democratic Party's leadership closer to its own base on Israel-Palestine. I don't necessarily agree with the conclusion but I think it demonstrates a serious thinking we need in the lead-up to 2028.

I think a product could maybe fairly summarize the letter of the law in plainer language without straying into providing advice. As soon as it's dealing with applying the law to specific facts, it's being a lawyer.

If you can't provide the legal advice competently, you have to decline to provide advice. You can try to help them find alternative counsel; I've done that a lot of times with individual clients who needed advice on a completely different issue to the one I was helping them with.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding, but are you asking whether that kind of disclaimer would help? I think no, because if you say that as a lawyer, it also doesn't help.

Similarly "what is the procedure for filing a civil complaint in New York County Supreme Court?" is just a review of the court rules and statutes that are all public information. "Here are facts, what should I do/do I have a claim?" is advice.

I think the latter is almost certainly not covered under any reasonable reading of the statute. That's not advice, it's simply restating very well-established facts in the public record. "My A1C is high, what should I do?" is advice that a chatbot probably shouldn't provide.

As a rule I never give anyone advice involving criminal law because I'm a civil litigator, I don't really know what I'm talking about, and I have an ethical and legal duty to only provide competent advice.

As a lawyer if you provide someone with legal advice, you are liable if they follow it and it was not competent legal advice even if it was casual.

A book isn't interactive, and an author touting their book as legal advice for someone's case would absolutely be engaged in the unlicensed practice of law (or if licensed would arguably be forming an attorney client relationship with ethical responsibilities to readers)

This is really basic consumer protection for people engaging with a process that if not done correctly can absolutely ruin their lives.
