picking up a games magazine in the mid 2000s means you were being treated to approximately 300 images just like this one every month, in between a page of adverts for phone sex hotlines and fawlty towers ringtones

the CTA's 2600-series cars are mostly confined to the Orange & Brown Lines these days, but the Blue Line still has a slim handful. I've had pretty good luck catching them. In recent months I've rode on Nos. 2736, 3128, 2999, and 2979

The Dan Ryan Expressway was built to increase segration in Chicago, displaced tens of thousands of Black Chicagoans and increases polution in neighborhoods. Why is naming it after someone supposed to be an honor?

a cute and rather rustic church viewed from a side angle on approach, obscured partially by some leafless tree branches & framed by a row of bushes/hedges at bottom. another church, this one much more palatial & grand & awe-inspiring, boasting a central (copper?) dome and several flanking towers, built of handsome deep reddish brick & featuring a number of different style windows & cross details/decals throughout. A telephone wire cuts diagonally across the scene, and sunlight reflects bright white in one particular window. a quiet view of a neighborhood park, looking out from behind a tree, a bench, and the double-tall fencing which encloses a dusty baseball diamond, towards a field and its surrounding buildings, with the Chicago skyline’s iconic sears tower eye-catchingly visible beyond. A hazy view of a rusty, graffiti-covered elevated railroad right of way/viaduct, seen from the street level below, with a couple of unassuming brick buildings, a billboard advertising some accident attorneys, and a white&black water tower, rising above the viaduct in the background.

I mean it's not like poor people (who are most likely to accidentally overdraw a card) are the most reliant on transit or anything. Augh.

Also super cool how this extends to the Ventra *app* as well, so I have to do a stupid shell game where I transfer the money to a different card in order to add it to my transit card. The new Ventra updates better fix this shit but I'm not hopeful.

stumbled upon this incredible, old school billboard surviving in Hermosa. I'd only seen this style as little model train scenery before! There's still a gas station here, but no longer a Marathon.

I fell for a vibe-coded Spotify-like wrapper for Soulseek called Sonosano, really bummed me out, cause it worked alright and was real sleek. I'd heard accusations of vibe-coding, but being unverified I continued on- until I noticed they left the ChatGPT footer in their Github page.

"urbs in horto" sounds like what you get from translating nudes in bio back and forth from Chinese to English like 20 times

There's this beautiful level of "busy' on a bus, right between "full" and "crush loaded", that really makes you feel alive

Americans are addicted to cars, but in many ways it's a forced addiction. Decades of policy have made cars the dominant mode of travel at the expense of others, and marketing reinforces the car as the "best" choice. This isn't to excuse individual choices, but car dependency is a systemic issue.

Mexican Dance Studio Students Doused With Water, Threatened With ICE In 'Hate Incident' Neighbors threw liquid on kids leaving a dance class at Ballet Folklorico de Chicago. Police are investigating while the community rallies around the dance studio and its students.

Absolutely vile act by people who live next to this dance studio and had no hesitation about being caught

I am kinda fascinated by art that you can clearly tell is a horrible racist caricature but times have changed so much I can't really tell who it's a racial caricature *of*.

I feel like we're on track to have "weird" Asian snacks that aren't actually sold in Asia, but only exist for those crappy snack grocery stores, in the same way that Mexican Coke isn't actually sold in Mexico.

An illustrated diagram showing how country houses go through cycles of building up and breaking down as humans come and go from them. How through Blood, Sweat, Tears, and Elbow Grease a house is built up, then decays through Condensation, Pollination, Captivation, and Evaporation, aided and and abetted by both the eye of the occult and buried secrets.

How Houses Re-Enchant Themselves

From the essay "The Ecology of The Abandoned Farmhouse" found in Beyond The Fields We Know: An Almanac of Midwestern Prairie Spirits.

I've heard "front yard businesses" float around in urbanism circles a few times, but nothing snappy. When it's a suburban house with a garage jutting out the front, I've heard "snouthouses"
