A old, hollow, much weathered Oak tree log that’s been washed by many floods lies amongst a little grove of fast growing volunteer Box Elders at the junction of the creek and river, in the muddy flat fields. The autumnal air and mild evening light cast a very particular mood about the image - to my mind of the coming and going of life.

The light was low forcing me to shoot at ISO 12800 but with a long lens (1280mm equivalent) so the little fellow pretty much filled the frame and with almost no cropping the noise didn’t amount to much.

I’m sure lucky to live near by such a place.

A low evening sun casts shadows from both the trees lining the river across the just harvested soy fields, and under the dense white clouds above, yet beyond the horizon is in full sunlight. (The photographer was able to hide his shade in that of the trees, as you can imagine a giant human shadow figure reaching “miles” across a flat, golden evening landscape is most likely to be an undesirable element.)

I found it striking as it came “out of the camera” and ended up reducing the saturation a little to make it more credible!

The ripply water before the Muskrat’s dam reflects with astonishing intensity, magnifying its colour and portent, a blue sky crowded by ripply white clouds,, while framed with dark mud, and the lively greens and yellows of the Autumn vegetation in full low sunlight.

The setting sun shines on the bush beyond the soybean field, revealing the developing autumn colours. The ripe soy crop will be harvested any day now so I’m trying to soak in its beautiful bronze tones to nourish the palette of my mind’s eye throughout the coming winter.
