We're not entirely sure but it may be related to marsupials living within a low oxygen environment in the pouch, or it might help for rapid post-natal development. Thanks for the interest!

Here's a fun one for #FluorescenceFriday. Did you know #marsupials have an entirely different CNS vascular anatomy to most animals? Arterioles and venules enter the brain and branch in unison, terminating at capillary loops. Check out this example from a #TasmanianDevil brain! (1/2)
