Really! That's one of my all-time scariest -- how are you on Paranormal Activity?
I’d love to understand why horror films that I find excruciatingly dull give others the heebie-jeebies.

You can’t help rooting for Colleen Hoover heroines, bless their bruised hearts.

Here's what should win on Sunday.
And here's what should have been nominated gosh dang it.
Justice for EDDINGTON, ANN LEE, HEDDA, LURKER, SPIDER WOMAN, PHOENICIAN SCHEME -- and even Ariana Grande in WICKED: FOR GOOD who is the best part of the whole dang thing.

This week on Unspooled: My favorite art EVER?
Yee-haw! Stoked to be on this year's SXSW narrative feature jury with @mcastimovies.bsky.social @gregoryellwood.bsky.social

THE BRIDE! is a maniacal assemblage of ’30s musicals, ’40s noirs, 19th century literature and 21st century ideology. Every wacky second, you’re well aware how perilously close it is to falling apart at the seams.

Anderson .Paak could be the right star to earnestly explore what it means that the Top 40 is shifting eastward. But this adventure in Seoul is simply an ego trip.

Maybe in the boldest meta twist of all, the inventor of “Scream” wants to kill it off himself.

Paul is a genius
Lelaina and Troy are my Catherine and Heathcliff
Ditto and ditto! Also the book's best parts are about boring, dehumanizing bureaucracy -- great to read, hard to film
The first hour of EPiC: ELVIS PRESLEY IN CONCERT convinces you that the King is the greatest entertainer who ever lived. By the end credits, he’s a god.
I think Baz Luhrmann prays aliens will discover this footage and build a religion around it.

Also great!
Still waiting on Glen Powell's perfect A-list role, but this is close

And the Kermit/Miss Piggy/Sabrina Carpenter love triange

This week's Slate Culture Gabfest was a fun one: I discussed Wuthering Heights, the JFK Jr./Carolyn Bessette Ryan Murphy joint Love Story, & the maybe-pilot for a new Muppet Show with @theamynicholson.bsky.social & @jamellebouie.net.

just saying, if you want a horny, pervy movie about a swoony romantic in love with a cruel but devastatingly hot man … Pillion is in theaters now
This video is a stunning facsimile of Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt starring in a piece of shit.
(It's awesome!)
GOOD LUCK, HAVE FUN, DONT DIE opens like an AI merged THE TERMINATOR and GROUNDHOG DAY.
But this funny, savage and surprising anti-tech comedy is so intricate and angry — so shamelessly ambitious — you can’t believe today’s Hollywood put up the cash to get it made

I spoke to Emerald Fennell, Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi about adapting ‘Wuthering Heights’ and their desire to make the viewer feel something for @latimes.com
😻
Turn-ons of Emerald Fennell’s WUTHERING HEIGHTS include raw eggs, rainstorms, dog collars, horse bridles, paper mushrooms and aspic-smothered fish — a caricature of lust that befits this unconvincingly erotic adaptation of a Victorian-era novel written by a virgin.

with respect to every other outlet, no one has done a better job at covering the cultural impact of Bad Bunny before AND after his Super Bowl performance better than @latimes.com De los section. Here’s a thread, starting with this thoughtful essay on Ricky Martin

we need to talk about that Ring Super Bowl ad
I doubt this has happened before: 11 of this weekend's top 15 movies were made independently, inc. 4 of the top 5. There is nothing holding down overall grosses and attendance more than the fact that studios have forgotten how to do what they used to do, which is to fill the pipeline with movies.
The Knicks got Jose Alvarado?! Love that guy, always low-key hoped he'd become a Laker.
