"Rafael, what the bloody hell did you get yourself into this time?" He looked up at the voice in the doorway. Admiral Greintoum's tone held equal amounts of affection and irritation. The man stood almost seven and a half ilms, even taller than most Roegadyns. Despite himself, Rafael felt a smile tug at the corners of his mouth. "Always to the point, eh, Greintoum?" He rolled his eyes and sat down in the nearest chair, uninvited. Then again, a man of his stature could sit anywhere he damn well pleased. The captain of the Lady Blackrose had seen his share of hell on high water on the trade routes between Limsa and Radz at Han. A seven-year stint as Limsa's admiral hadn't improved his disposition, either. But Greintoum's keen eyes and shrewd mind was needed, now more than ever. "I know when a friend of mine needs help," he said, blunt and to the point, "and you've always been stubborn when it comes to askin'. So I'm savin' you the trouble." Rafael gave him a wry smile. "I can't hide anything from you, can I?" "I don't know what they teach you tree-huggers in Gridania, but you lot need a swift kick in the pants sometimes." Greintoum leaned forward. "So come out, out with it." "My new student arrived on the boat this morning." He told them about how M'hroyo TIa had fallen into the harbor, and how he and another Miqo'te named Lethe Tavoss had saved him from a watery grave. Then he mentioned the voice M'hroyo had claimed to have heard.

"Sounds like the lad's not used to the aether round here. Happens to people who come here from other parts," Greintoum said laconically. "Is he all right?" "He's recovering, though I see swimming lessons in his near future," Rafael said in a dry tone. Greintoum barked with laughter. "To be fair, M'hroyo comes from the M Tribe in the Sagolii Desert. No ocean out there." "Then I hope he learns quickly before he becomes a drowned rat." The flash of humor was gone as quickly as it had come. "There's more than that, though." Rafael got up from his chair and began pacing. He thought better while moving, and it was a habit from his conjurer days. Greintoum only sat back and waited as he gathered his thoughts. After a long moment, he stopped and looked up at the ceiling. "You mentioned the aether around Limsa. Something odd is afoot my friend. First a murder victim drained of every last bit. Then my new student is affected by what looks like aether sickness and falls off a boat. It can't be a coincidence."

"You think the aether's just being wonky? It happens sometimes." He nodded and continued to pace. "Indeed, but not quite like this, not quite to the extremes. I have no proof, but it is rather unsettling." Greintoum said nothing for a moment. Although he was no aetherologist, he understood that anything taken to an extreme was a bad thing. "What are you gonna do about it then?" "I have a colleague from Sharlayan who is well versed in this sort of thing. He is visiting the Arcanists Guild on a different matter, but I will speak with him. In the meantime--" "Just keep my eyes and ears open, like the usual?" "Aye, if you could." "Say no more." Greintoum got up and stretched. "I'll talk to some of my old crewmates still around, maybe they've heard somethin'. I'll let you know." Rafael smiled. "Thank you." "No problem. Well, if I know you, you've been holed up in your office way too long. C'mon, I'm draggin' you out to the Bismarck for a bite to eat. Even book thumpers like you need food."
