The death of possibly more than 100 little girls in a primary school. How is that not a central news story today across all serious outlets?
And thank you, FT, for being one of only a few newsrooms driving attention to what happened there.

Yes, global electricity consumption by data centres may double by 2030. I wish the FT had added some more proportionality from the same IEA report: “However, in the wider context, a 3% share in 2030 means the data centre share in global electricity demand remains limited.”

Stefan Zweig in „The World of Yesterday“, 1941:
„Once I tried to shape it, I didn‘t quite suffer as much anymore from the tragedy of our time“.
Reminds me of a golden rule of climate communication: try to convey the urgency with agency. Agency as a coping mechanism.
Remember when CBS News laid off its whole climate reporting team last fall?
Good news: I've scooped up their former senior climate producer, and now she's making a podcast with me.
Sucks to suck, David Ellison!

i was actually shocked to see the numbers on new research from Global Energy Monitor on new gas projects in the US: nearly 100 gigawatts of power—enough to power tens of millions of homes—are currently in development explicitly to power data centers. At the end of 2023 that number was 4 gigawatts

NEW: Guards have taken away crayons, colored pencils & paper during recent room searches at Dilley, according to detainees and others. After one inspection, the children just “cried and cried and cried,” a mother said. The facility denies the claims.

It builds so nicely on a point that I've been screaming from the roof top for years: Fossil fuel pollution is the leading cause of avoidable morbidity and mortality in the world today, and it places an enormous burden on the economy of every nation as a result.

Since Brexit, being German in the UK has been a professional disadvantage.
Since about six months, though, I have noticed many subtle changes that tell me the tide is turning.
I love the UK and love living here. But this has been a long valley.
Even if global warming was not such a pressing issue, renewables are not only more affordable and less price-volatile than single-use fossile fuels, they also increase a country’s resilience in armed conflict.

Trump‘s ‚clean coal‘ is Germany‘s ‚green oil‘.
Neither exists. Neither are needed. Both are meant as distractions and cost us precious time.
