I agree. You don't need to be in a city for a place to have what you need in biking distance. Most places outside the US have towns that still work like this. They don't tend to offer much street parking, as a hint as to the "how."

Yesterday the detour involved the Park ramp which was covered in broken glass, and biking against traffic on Park dodging parked cars left there the entire day despite signage.
I would guess not one single 94 closure detour involved sharing a lane with counterflowing traffic.
