๐ŸŒ๐ŸŒŽ Spoon-billed Sandpiper (Calidris pygmaea)

The Spoon-billed Sandpiper is a small wader with a unique spatulate bill. Breeding adults have a red-brown head and breast, while non-breeding birds are grayish-brown. They breed on the coasts of the Bering Sea and migrate along the Pacific coast to wintering grounds in Southeast Asia. This critically endangered species forages by walking forward with its head down, sweeping its bill from side to side to sift for invertebrates in the mud and shallow water. 2.5 Flash (Edited)

No known subspecies are recognised.

Conservation status: Critically Endangered (IUCN 3.1)

UTAS researcher @james-pay.bsky.social and team from School of Natural Sceinces have analysed 6 years of eagle-worn GPS tracking data to develop a tool to map the risk of eagle and power line collisions. Data driven science that promotes both vital infrastructure and biodiversity conservation.

Where the wild bees are: Birds improve indicators of bee richness Widespread declines in wild bee populations necessitate urgent action, but insufficient data exist to guide conservation efforts. Addressing this data deficit, we investigated the relative performance...

Why do birds help predict bee richness beyond land covers? Birds complement satellites by indicating small habitat features like flowering shrubs and land management practices. Together with land covers, they add insight to wild bee conservation science. ๐Ÿค+๐Ÿ›ฐ๏ธ=๐Ÿ

We are also monitoring the responses of the 3 species to these treatments. This owl chose to nest in an area that was thinned 3-4 years earlier. Owl photo by @connoragland, habitat photo by Ramiro Aragon.

We're working with the Forest Service to locate nests of Great Gray, Spotted Owls, and American Goshawks, so that forest managers can avoid nest areas when planning forest thinning and prescribed burn treatments used to reduce the risk of catastrophic wildfires.
