Essay: I’m aware of how vulnerable I am on my bike when I place my left foot on the pavement, waiting for the light to change, surrounded by cars next to me ready to roar, writes Mathilde Piton. At the same time, there’s a feeling of power. I’m in charge.

New research tracking the first-year survival rates for lake sturgeon released to a #GreatLakes tributary, the Maumee River, in 2018, 2019 + 2021 suggests that efforts are on track to achieve naturally-reproducing lake sturgeon in the river (hopefully) by 2038 news.utoledo.edu/index.php/07...

A smiling firefighter in uniform stands in front of a Portuguese rescue helicopter. Bold text over the image reads: "Save Lives, Protect Livelihoods." Below, a blue banner says: "Enhancing Firefighting Resources – Portugal. New and upgraded centres, hangars, equipment and helicopters are boosting firefighting capacity in rural areas." The bottom right corner features the slogan: "Europe’s Budget – The Power of Together" with an EU flag.
Our 🇪🇺 budget sends support rapidly when and where it's needed.
In 🇵🇹, EU funding boosts firefighting with upgraded helicopters, equipment and facilities, to protect people and nature.

Jason Delgado (Florida Capitol reporter for Spectrum News 13) on X: "Quick look at what inside a detainment tent looks like here at Alligator Alcatraz." What is shown in the picture is a long tent structure, about 50 feet wide. There is a corridor running down the middle. On each side are three rows of bunk beds. The bunk beds are sectioned off into cells which are constructed out of chain link fence, with chain link on the ceiling as well, making each cell a literal cage. It looks to me like each cell contains 9 bunk beds, so has capacity for 18 people each.
Literal cages. Not even metaphorical ones. Literal ones.

When you think about planting native plants in the area you control, what *prevents* you from taking that action? These could be emotional, financial, practical, anything.

Greyscale map of an island, labeled "Caterpillar Island." The island is drawn to resemble the Very Hungry Caterpillar, as the clients requested. At the bottom of the map is a magnifying glass showing two smaller islands that look like pigs, labelled "The Piglets" in the lower right-hand part of the map. The island has a number of drawn locations, including a quarry, a dump, a building showing the main street, a house, a restaurant called "The Crab Shack", a trailer, and a broken-down house with a tree growing through it. Each has a label. There are also a number of animals, drawn in a style that will be familiar to anyone who has followed me for very long. They are drawn with abstract black shapes and lines, and have a PNW indigenous aesthetic. There's a squirrel, an eel, 3 glass eels, a lobster, a crab, and footprint.
Lately, I've been working on a map for a mystery novel. After much back & forth & redrawing, the book's authors decided not to use it.
That's frustrating, 'cause it was a lot of work & rework. And I like to help readers see a book's world. Sigh. But it's a good map, & so I'm sharing it with y'all.

Split-image with the text “TO BEE or NOT TO BEE.” The left side shows a vibrant wildflower meadow with a bee on a daisy, symbolising biodiversity and a healthy ecosystem. The right side shows a dry, barren landscape with dead trees and no visible wildlife, representing environmental degradation. An EU flag appears in the bottom right corner.

The state of Georgia is using the body of a brain-dead woman as an incubator. Because she was 9 weeks pregnant when she died, and their abortion ban is from about 6 weeks, they are sustaining her on life support, without input from her family, until 32 weeks of gestation. In September 2023, geophysicists across the world started monitoring a very odd signal coming from the ground under them.
It was picked up in the Arctic. And Antarctica. It was detected everywhere, every 90 seconds, as regular as a metronome, for *nine days*.
