We're excited to share details of our first event of the year!
'Digital Humanities on the Edge: Infrastructure, Surveillance, Platforms, Artificial Intelligence.'
Friday 27th March
11am AEDT (via Zoom - link to follow)
Details & registration: events.humanitix.com/digital-huma...
Our teachers union @aft.org is collaborating not only with OpenAI but also with some outfit called BuildSubmarines-dot-com that will host a session that "connects career literacy to the Maritime Industrial Base and the U.S. Navy’s workforce needs"?! Unbelievably misjudged. @aftteach.bsky.social
Too realistic! 'Detecting “authentic” student thinking is technically possible, but prohibitively expensive. Think about it: We would need to pay real human faculty to interact with real human students. We do not have the budget for that.'
👀 Is this a third-party plugin or a Canvas add-on feature? (Concerned about the labor issue of dysfunctional automated surveillance of faculty, who should be respected as the experts on inclusive course design!)
For the higher ed context, I appreciated this conversation from people who do care: "Who Cares About Procurement?" (_Higher Education for Good_ 2023) library.oapen.org/bitstream/ha...
Thanks!
Anyone know of plans for/interest in an ACH 2026 hub in SoCal? @plach.bsky.social ? Might people like to come out to Irvine?
Even spelled out as a model to be replicated in OpenAI's press release: "partnerships to support teacher-led AI adoption like with the American Federation of Teachers in the United States" openai.com/index/edu-fo...
Cal State University’s deal with OpenAI — providing ChatGPT to all faculty, students, and staff — will expire in June 2026. Amid the prospect of layoffs in the CSU, we’re asking the chancellor not to renew this costly and demoralizing contract.

Solidarity with teachers @utlanow.bsky.social "i-Ready software generates new and unique questions for students based on [...] an algorithm, but parents and teachers are unable to see what children are asked, in part because the company that makes the program considers them proprietary information."
A helpful document to share with colleagues who persist in the "policing" mode!

Painfully true (as all your characterizations in this list), but with some exceptions: bsky.app/profile/trev...
My colleagues and I in a first-year humanities program have been considering the same! In case helpful to others: I just checked www.zotero.org/accessibility and am glad to see the desktop app and browser add-on meet WCAG 2.2 AA.
And we're back! Join us December 4–5, 2025 at Northeastern University in Boston for our 12th annual The Caribbean Digital Conference. Our schedule is packed with wonders and amazing colleagues. Check it out! As always, attendance is free, whether zoom or live. Hope to see you there!
I keep taking opportunities to share the link to your PMLA piece in case any colleagues haven't read it yet:

For all those @aft.org members who disagree with your national union's decision to accept tens of millions of dollars from @microsoft.com, OpenAI, and @anthropic.com, you're not alone.
@cftunion.bsky.social opposes these partnerships and your union can join us.
