This case comes amidst the racial gerrymandering by Republican legislators in Texas. “Against the backdrop of other states trying to dismantle majority-minority coalition districts, it is crucial for NY’s highest court to reject racist election schemes,” says Patrick Stegemoeller, AALDEF.

The brief recounts the importance of coalition districts for protecting the political power of racial minorities—especially Asian communities and smaller groups, whose ability to effectively advocate for their issues is often only possible in tandem with others.

Despite making up 40% of the town, no Black or Latino person has ever been elected to the town board. “For too long, Latino and Black residents in Newburgh have been denied fair representation and been disenfranchised,” says Cesar Ruiz, LatinoJustice.

Today, we released a statement in response to the Trump administration’s proclamation instituting a travel ban on 12 countries and onerous restrictions on 7 other countries.

This travel ban is a blatant act of hate, but we will not stop fighting back against their white supremacist agenda.

The admin continues to fuel discrimination and violence against Asian Americans with its hateful anti-China rhetoric and policies. Banning Chinese students is both unjust and does nothing to protect US national security. It only serves to put another bright red target on our backs.
