As Colombia's Petro heads to the White House to meet with Trump on Tuesday, Feb. 3, I wrote about how the recent @progintl.bsky.social summit in Bogotá and Colombian election polls might contain signs of an ascendent global left. Full report in @thenation.com : www.thenation.com/article/worl...
...but also reduce poverty from 40 percent to 9.
The objective case for transition has never been stronger.
The case for avoiding transition or prolonging it through bridges and geoengineering stunts has never been weaker.
But outside of @natashakimiz.bsky.social, who is talking about it?
And this lovely @drilledmedia.bsky.social podcast:

Where I first heard about this model, I've heard nothing about the energy transition that a small, impoverished, petro-poor state did to not only become energy independent and energy secure...

As Keir Starmer purges the left and dances to Nigel Farage’s xenophobic tune, I look at how Labour's mounting failures created an opening for @jeremycorbyn.bsky.social @zarahsultana.bsky.social to found a new left-wing party. Check out my latest for @thenation.com
Recently read #AnotherWorldisPossible by @natashakimiz.bsky.social - it is equal parts inspiring, challenging, hopeful, and actionable. It’s the perfect book for the current moment - highly recommend to the other freedom dreamers out there.

This episode was fascinating - so many examples of countries who took big steps to improve the lives of their people.
This is an INCREDIBLE episode. Why do 80% of people in Singapore live in government-built housing? Why is graduate school free in Finland? Why does over 98% of Uruguay run on renewable energy?? Absolutely LOVED this. open.spotify.com/episode/3R5s...
I’m looking forward to diving into @natashakimiz.bsky.social ‘s debut book, full of real-world examples that democratic socialist policies can (and do) work.
Beyond thrilled to announce ANOTHER CITY IS POSSIBLE (a follow up of sorts to my first book on progressive policies through a more local lens) is forthcoming from @thenewpress.bsky.social ! So grateful to Marc Favreau, Rob McQuilkin, and everyone at The New Press and MMQALit.
Fantastic conversation with Vincent Bevins and packed audience last night in London's Libreria for the UK launch of Another World Is Possible ( @thenewpress.bsky.social )
A great evening with @natashakimiz.bsky.social with her really hopeful book ‘Another World Is Possible’
* UK’s universal healthcare
* Finland’s universal public education
* Singapore’s affordable housing for all
* Norway’s equalising childcare responsibilities and parental leave

As the federal gov attempts to decimate much-needed programs, we more than ever need to not only protect our ability to get citizen-led initiatives on state ballots, but also ensure that politicians do not undermine the democratic will of the people they purport to represent once measures pass.
When I'm asked why I have hope that the progressive policies I report on in my book *Another World Is Possible* have a fighting chance in the US, I point to these sort of egalitarian/redistributive citizen-led initiatives, which, Ben Case writes, pass 75% of the time: jacobin.com/2025/05/sand...
If you live in states like Missouri, Alaska, Nebraska and others that passed progressive measures like paid sick leave through citizen-led initiatives, beware of how Republicans are actively undermining / dismantling this form of direct democracy:

THIS is what I mean when I say over and over again Americans are getting a bad deal. In the wealthiest country in the history of the planet, how is it that 2/3 of the population can't afford to get by?!
(I say he--but obviously Mujica did not do this alone, as I clearly outline in the excerpt. He was, however, instrumental.)
While, of course, Harris did not have the opportunity to put the key lesson in this article into practice, it's something the center-left in both the US and UK still desperately need to learn.
Honored to be nominated for a Southern California Journalism Award by the @lapressclub.bsky.social in the immigration reporting category for my @thenation.com piece "The Recent Riots in the UK Should Be a Warning to Kamala Harris." www.thenation.com/article/worl...
Uruguay’s late former President Pepe Mujica did so much for Uruguay, including lifting thousands out of poverty during his tenure and playing a critical role in the country’s record-breaking renewable energy transition

In my latest for @jacobinmag.bsky.social I write about how the most obvious answer to Los Angeles' deepening housing crisis remains absent from post-fire plans and political promises: public housing.
