Rebecca Solnit (born 1961) - Writer, Feminist, and Cultural Historian Rebecca Solnit may be one of the most influential women in modern society you’ve might never have heard of. A lifelong advocate for environmental justice, feminism, and hope amid crisis, Solnit’s essays and books challenge readers to see the world — and their own agency — in new ways. In 2008 while at a party, a man repeatedly, and insistently explained a book to her. A book she herself had written. The exchange led her to write essay titled "Men Explain Things to Me." Her most powerful observation in the essay, delivered in a single devastating sentence, was "Men invented standards they could meet and called them universal." And though Solnit never used the term herself, that essay gave birth to a word that would enter the dictionary and change conversations worldwide: MANSPLAINING. The man who interrupts a woman in a meeting isn't an isolated jerk. He's the product of a system that taught him his voice matters more. Solnit's work asks: What happens when we stop accepting male experience as the default? For centuries, history was written by men, so male experiences became "history" while women's experiences became "women's history. Male perspectives became "literature" while women's writing was "women's fiction". Another revelation threading through Solnit's work: silence doesn't mean contentment. It often means suppression. Solnit argues that silence often means voices have been suppressed so successfully that people have stopped trying to speak. In her essay collection The Mother of All Questions, Solnit examines the questions women face constantly: Why don't you have children? Why don't you smile more? Why are you so angry? These aren't innocent questions. They're enforcement mechanisms—subtle ways of policing women's choices, emotions, and very existence.
