Sitting in a hotel lobby feeding my toddler breakfast, we watched TV news. What would the country look like if TV news took the time to tell stories and explain issues that impacted people’s lives rather than the every visual tragedy from aggregated across the world (even on local news)?

Here’s what I learned along the way:

1. Meet your audience where they are.
2. Before the meeting, understand what they truly value.
3. Bring what they value to the meeting.
4. Ask for feedback.
5. Bring cookies 🍪.

Asked a longtime friend in a different state about her kids school. It’s a STEM school that does PBL but she couldn’t speak to what PBL is or why it’s valuable. She had no indication if it’s being done with fidelity or effectiveness.

There’s a significant amount of parents who say “I want my school to focus on the basics/academics/fundamentals” and what they really mean is that eduspeak has become a foreign language. Initiatives are on as good as their implementation. Fascinating to ask parents to talk about their kid’s school.

Implementation is always complex, which is why most strategic plans and initiatives fail. Typically, when an organization wants to improve, innovate, or grow, it isn't changing the bike tire it already knows how to fix.
