At the network launch event in April, we announce a competition for ECRs to design our logo. It is with great pleasure that we can now share the finished product, based on a winning design by @chownbioinf.bsky.social !

My group at is hiring a PhD student to explore how fungal pathogens that live in the environment will adapt their genomes, acquire new phenotypes, and perhaps even increased infectivity as a result of climate change. Please share!

This is one of the best features I have seen on blue sky yet- a custom feed of papers from people you follow. I had to un-follow the various biorxiv channels, as it was dominant, but now I am seeing lots of cool papers from people I follow.

Great work on this feed, @paper-feed.bsky.social team!

Zoonotic Host Richness in the Global Wildland–Urban Interface In the wildland–urban interface (WUI), where human settlements abut or intermix with wildlands, people may encounter animals that host zoonotic pathogens, which can spillover to cause human disease. ...

New paper led by Rohan Simkin exploring global patterns of zoonotic hosts in the wildland-urban interface. WUIs are a complex and expanding contact zone with many potential host species that are likely to be consequential for spillover transmission on a rapidly urbanizing planet. bit.ly/WUI-zdx

Environmental microbiome, human fungal pathogens, and antimicrobial resistance Traditionally, antifungal resistance (AFR) has received much less attention compared with bacterial resistance to antibiotics. However, global changes, pandemics, and emerging new fungal infections have highlighted global health consequences of AFR. The recent report of the World Health Organisation (WHO) has identified fungal priority pathogens, and recognised AFR among the greatest global health threats. This is particularly important given the significant increase in fungal infections linked to climate change and pandemics. Environmental factors play critical roles in AFR and fungal infections, as many clinically relevant fungal pathogens and AFR originate from the environment (mainly soil). In addition, the environment serves as a potential rich source for the discovery of new antifungal agents, including mycoviruses and bacterial probiotics, which hold promise for effective therapies. In this article, we summarise the environmental pathways of AFR development and spread among high priority fungal pathogens, and propose potential mechanisms of AFR development and spread. We identify a research priority list to address key knowledge gaps in our understanding of environmental AFR. Further, we propose an integrated roadmap for predictive risk management of AFR that is critical for effective surveillance and forecasting of public health outcomes under current and future climatic conditions.
