Besides this, depending on the hour: Turkish breakfast, or Syrian and Georgian restaurants can be quite unique.

It got super expensive in the past year (Western Europe prices). Traffic is insane, esp on the European side.
Haven't tried the metro (can get Istanbulkart and should be able to top up with card). Rarely need for cash.
As you'd arrive in Gayretepe, Taksim is a touristic area.
