they think it's all over. a column on dislocation, dissociation and why you're not enjoying football as much as you used to

In the Premier League Arsenal are:
π Joint top for avg goals scored: 2 per game
π Top for touches in the opposition box: 999
π΄ 2nd for possession won in final 3rd: 4.9pg
π΄ 3rd for shots on target: 4.9pg
𧀠Top for goals conceded: 0.7pg
How much better can they play?
Haaland is obviously still elite and terrifying and everything, and I'm sure he'll score 8 goals in the two games against us in the next 6 weeks but...
If Gyokeres had not reached the ball across the box that Haaland didn't get to yesterday, I'd have been LIVID. Tap in for a striker, 2-0, game over
The hill on which I will die this morning: while both were great, Gibbs-White's goal was miles better than Anderson's.
05.03.2026 09:16 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I hope you're right. I fear it clicks for them - not sure why, but I have a feeling about him
05.03.2026 09:01 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0They're 13th, 3 points off 9th. Surely if they finish top half he'll be there at the start of next season?
05.03.2026 08:57 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 2 π 0Fabian Hurzeler is the manager the press pretend is arteta. He's spent the entire build up whining, the entire match whining, and the entire post match whining. I feel bad for Brighton fans that they have to put up with his mediocre bullshit.

I *think* the meat wall grows from the idea that first everyone put a man on the keeper, then every defence realised you need a man to move that guy off your keeper (forcefully) and it escalated.
Could this be the de-escalation?
Leaving aside your fame (which is so great!) I think last night we saw a key shift in the meat walk. Brighton had two men on Raya, and arsenal just left them. He gets free(er) movement, and if he goes down thereβs no question of it being a defender.

03.03.2026 18:50 β π 97 π 7 π¬ 15 π 4I assume so. Iβd be over the moon if we could go into the city away game with a lead of 6+ (assuming they win their game in hand). Because that would mean a win makes it almost unassailable, and a defeat still keeps it in our hands. But that feels like a slightly unlikely scenario
04.03.2026 22:26 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I didnβt list forest in my βteams city might drop points againstβ but it almost makes my point more. This is a mad competitive league. Not many teams are winning 7,8,9 in a row. Dropped points are normal

I thought city would drop points in unexpected places. And I still do.
But from an Arsenal point of view, framing it as 7 isnβt helpful. Itβs likely to be 4, because city win most of their games. And when that happens, we need to not feel like itβs a setback. Four is still great!

Massive appreciation for Havertz today.
His sub made a massive difference towards Arsenal's ability to grab a foothold in this match.

I think theyβll drop points between now and the end. Which means we probably only need to win 6 of 8, maybe 5 if we beat them.
Itβs a lovely place to be, but 6 more wins is going to be extremely hard!
Yup. If we had four more points (Brentford and wolves) then I might be feeling a bit better - because I think city would start resting players for CL.
But 4 points is nothing, given how nervy we are!
One of the journalists in the room should ask Fabian Hurzeler about his team being near the bottom of the league in terms of ball-in-play time per match, more than ten places behind Arsenal.

Iβm not here to piss on anyoneβs parade, or tell anyone not to be full of joy tonight.
But the lead isnβt really 7 points with the game in hand. Itβs 4, with 8 to go. And thatβs great, itβs a huge lead at this stage. But itβs not over, not even close
Football is mad. You spend most of ninety minutes feeling miserable and when the final whistle blows you experience pure unadulterated joy which lasts the rest of the day. Love it.
