If you're using AI to write essays, eulogies, a text to your wife, I do think less of you as a person. Ceding your mental and creative abilities to a machine is an embarrassing thing and people should be ashamed to admit doing it in public.

Even the messaging is easy: "Outlaw gerrymandering nationwide. But until gerrymandering is outlawed, we won't unilaterally disarm."

Tom Lehrer’s memorable 'Revue' session In 1951, the Harvard graduate student and future famed satirist skewered the physical sciences via song in a musical.

incredibly sad to hear that Tom Lehrer died yesterday. my illustrious predecessor @mbaldwin.bsky.social scored a rare interview with him in 2018 for @physicstoday.bsky.social on the "Physical Revue," a parody of the physical sciences he premiered at Harvard in 1951.

It is fucking insane that we had a decade of people complaining about the dangers of cancel culture, and now literally hundreds of thousands of people are being purged from government jobs for ideological reasons, but that is not cancel culture.

Yeah, I know. But our local pols have barely said anything about this and have barely put any pressure on state Rs. They should be camping out in Harrisburg demanding funding, but all they do is put out tepid statements (probably because none of them use public transit). It's pathetic.

What are you doing to make sure that SEPTA and public transit get the funding they need?

the fact that it’s come to this is an indictment of @governor.pa.gov, Cherelle Parker, City Council, and all Philly-area federal and state representatives.

Yes, PA Senate Republicans are holding @septaphilly.bsky.social hostage, but local pols have not risen to the challenge. Pathetic.

so as far as I can tell, the next Democratic president should issue executive orders on day one mandating universal healthcare, subsidized childcare, and dismantling ICE. because that's how the government works now, right?

tfw you fall down a rabbit hole about some tech bro podcaster who's read like five history books and thinks he can make grand, sweeping judgments about the history of science.

the arrogance is astounding.

Most incredible about this is that IU-Bloomington has long been the no. 1 university in the world for teaching Asian languages and cultures, with many programs found nowhere else.

They're slashing many of IU-B's most distinctive programs with zero thought or debate. They probably don't even know.

The online edition (NDB-online) my article is part of is the successor to that project. It already contains an additional 700+ entries and is constantly growing.

For those unaware, the Neue Deutsche Biografie is one of the largest biographical-dictionary projects of all time: The print version, published from 1953 to 2024, contains over 26,000 entries on historical figures from the German-speaking world.

Along with several other entries on figures like Werner Heisenberg, Max Born, and Wolfgang Pauli, my article is currently featured on the Deutsche Biografie homepage in honor of the International Quantum Year. #Quantum2025 #IYQ2025.

Deutsche Biographie - Jordan, Pascual Deutsche Biographie

For those who read German, my encyclopedia article on Pascual Jordan in the Neue Deutsche Biografie was published yesterday. Very proud of this piece—and honored to be part of such a historic project (it started in 1953!).
