The phrase “nostalgia for when we dreamt of a better apocalypse” popped into my head. And now it has popped into yours.

Not exactly a shocking conclusion. But increasingly urgent and unavoidable.

Listening to @iwriteok.bsky.social ok Epstein and getting an unexpected look at how decisions about what games to make are made. And like any news about AI, it just has me thinking: we can’t make decisions this way. Turning decisions over to powerful and unaccountable people leads to a bad place.

My roommate is taking a class that is forcing them to learn python—which is forcing me to learn python so I can teach it cos the instructor sucks. And at first glance … it’s awful.

I just hope it comes with a reckoning for all the BS spewers out there. The people who promote this knowing its harms and inadequacies. The people trying to force A’I’ on workers as a form of control. The people who use it because it makes it easier for them to BS others. Screw them all.

I cannot wait for the A’I’ companies to collapse. The bullshit economy is due for a reckoning.

Yeah, I know it’s hard to find an expert in a domain you aren’t an expert in. But you can try: ask friends of friends, see which names keep coming up in publications, etc.

Not perfect but light years better than trusting the BS machine’s output or trying to wing it after reading a paper or two.

You know what a sensible person would do upon learning that there’s another discipline that might bear on a problem they’re trying to solve? Go find a person with some expertise in that domain and have a chat.

The business world is being run by these kinds of completely un-self-aware sophomores who have been appointed upward to the level of their BS and bluster.

Unless we build a culture that keeps these people away from consequential decisions, we’re doomed..

This guy spouts words he’s read from philosophy but also speaks of causation at though it was a simple straightforward thing, easily embedded in some kind of all-encompassing engineering meta-model.

He admits that LLMs produce Frankfurtian BS but wants to rely on their output anyway.

No awareness at all of the potential for human bias in reviewing output or of the ironies of automation. No time for anyone who uses such awareness to point out the potential downsides to his plan.

An ex-software type who is now a middle manager at his tech company told me today that A’I’ is creative because an LLM regurgitated something from a discipline he’d never heard of—thus making him unable to judge the correctness of the response—and this BS impressed him.

I love having the filter ring; it gives me the ability to use filters to keep the exposure time over 1s when I have faster film loaded.

The biggest wish I have for it is for a fitting to use a cable release for a shutter.
