Only funding pet hypotheses favored by the government is how you end up with Lysenkoism.

(If you’re unfamiliar, it’s essentially a set of disproven ideas about plant growth that led to poor agriculture, famine, and the deaths of maybe 50 million people: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trofim_...)

Improving Oversight of Federal Grantmaking By the authority vested in me as President by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, and to improve the process of Federal

1. Federal funding for research promotes tech, biomedical, and scientific discovery in the US, and provides training for the sci/tech workforce that has brought immeasurable wealth to the US over the past 75 years.

Today's executive order includes a provision that will obliterate both functions.

In my dept. (biology, so for cell bio folks, ecology, etc, i.e. everybody) there was a time about > 12-15 years ago when some of the "old guard" and/or non-science folks felt our papers should be single-authored to fully count for tenure/promotion. Thankfully, no longer true!

Suggestions for good accessible papers (or topic for a "case study") for second-year bio students in an intro ecology & evolution class for a unit on "evolution and medicine" and "disease ecology"? For the latter, I've use Lyme disease in the past. Looking for more ideas! Thanks!!

The woody and brushy stuff on the Butler University campus prairie was too much for little old me and my little old chainsaw so we finally brought in some professionals. Hopefully with some fire and luck we can keep on top of it for a while. (Indianapolis, Indiana, USA).

Keep sciencing. We are living through a time when looking at a rock and wondering how old it is qualifies as an act of resistance.

Are you an early-career biologist or ecologist who would benefit from an invited seminar? Would you like to come to UMaine next fall or spring to give a talk? Leave a brief comment with some info about what you do. I'm co-hosting our seminar series again, and am filling out our rosters.

Indeed. It's really written for students with no prior coding experience at all. The idea, as was relayed to me, is that this book serves as a structure for a first course, with a second course to get into statistical analyses (and they have a book for that too)

This would be (in my opinion) a great starting place for getting familiar with basic data wrangling and graphics. Doesn't include statistical analyses (i.e. "tests"), but that's by design. Several of the authors are here on bluesky, I believe. They could answer questions.

Oooh! Taught a whole class on trade-offs this past spring. This was a class favorite (maybe because I brought in a bunch of chilies and the students were all game to try them!)

Just to get back to where we were as of January 2025, we will need Manhattan Projects across multiple agencies. This particular loss will produce exponentially increasing human injury and economic damage to the U.S. as the ability to investigate and to regulate falls apart.
