My mother was a nurse in the 1930s. Back then every hospital had a ward for women who had botched abortions. Because this was before antibiotics, most of them died, usually leaving behind several children. They had abortions because they couldn’t afford to have another child.
I'm a boomer and remember the "good old days" of back alley abortions and know at least one then girl who had one and almost bled to death. Additionally she ended up unable to have children.
