That's not a switch you can just turn on and off. Every art movement exists in a finite window, and all we can hope is to be lucky enough to experience them when they're happening.

…or the expert martial arts work of 1980s/90s Hong Kong cinema, or 80s slashers, or 90s romcoms -- even things like 70s soul music, 50s/60s jazz, etc. etc. because those movements were built on the backs of hundreds of people working as fine-tuned machines to crank those out.

I often think about how these massive art trends and quality of output are built on institutional knowledge that is developed over decades, and the idea that even if we wanted to, it would be impossible to recreate to the same level of mastery things like the 2D animation of golden age Disney…

And I think we all just took it as a given that this was just how it is, and not as an art form operating at peak output after 100 years of maturation, before premium TV and internet and IP changed everything.

You could do one of these for every year of cinema between 1975 and sometime in the early 00s and it would be nothing but bangers.

I can't help but realize my how much my life was shaped simply by growing up in the midst of Hollywood's pinnacle years (1970-2000), before everything became television, and then became streaming content.
