The combination of intelligence, caring and public awareness is very hard to replicate.
Are the #Hartley candidates going to be mere cogs of their party machinery? When have they put the greater wellbeing above their own ambitions? Is there a willingness to dig into detail? Will they share it rather than treating us like muppets? Will they push back on authoritarianism?

I believe the candidate for a party matters, not just the policies. But damn it’s hard to find real detail.
I’ll be filling out my ballot today as I’ll be interstate next weekend.

If only there was a mechanism to limit racial hatred or endless donations from billionaires. Who could make such a thing happen?

Very true. A lot of my fellow left/progressives talk as if we shouldn’t have a military as if unilateral disarmament would be viable. Europe is dealing with a version of that mistake. Which isn’t to say that all defence spending is good spending. As always, both the world and good policy is messy.
I think the problem is one of mistrust. What would otherwise seem reasonable is viewed with skepticism because the govt’s approach to the US and the Middle East in general. It’s hard to discount that it’s a prelude to something more, though I doubt Albanese wants it to be.
